We were tasked with creating a 3D object that a KUKA robot could trace using a light attached to its end. I chose to revisit my undergraduate Studio 1A project, Folded Light.
Folded Light emerges from the intersection of two earlier studies: Fractured Light, a gem-like mass, and Spilled Light, a mass defined by cylindrical voids. Fractured Light’s faceted geometry refracts light into varying shades of black, while Spilled Light does not fracture light but instead diffuses it across its cylindrical voids.
I wanted to bring this project full circle by translating it into a drawing made of light.

Man, what a freaking semester — and it’s not even over yet. One more week to go. Getting back into an academic groove at 38 has been rough. I struggled so much with the first two studio assignments that I honestly questioned why I even came back to school. Being socially awkward, having social anxiety, and the huge age gap with my classmates definitely didn’t help.
And then there’s the pressure of the scholarship — feeling like I have to live up to it and wondering if I even deserve it. Will I be back next semester? Who knows. For now, we #FightOn.
I’ve wanted an M.Arch for so long that I’ll probably end up coming back anyway (99% sure I’m coming back). I’m pretty sure a lot of this is just my ADHD doing its thing — the self-doubt, the emotional rollercoaster, all of it. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk on living with ADHD!
