This #MemorialDay, we honor and remember the brave service members who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Supporting veterans is an integral part of our American Humane Society mission, and we proudly honor their heroic service today and every day. Our Pups4Patriots™ program pairs specially trained service dogs with veterans (and retired first responders) struggling with post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury, offering hope and a helping hand when they need it most.

We’re grateful to compassionate supporters like @colemanallnaturalmeats for helping us make work possible. Together on this important day, we hold these heroes in our hearts, especially those we’ve lost and the loved ones they left behind.

After a trip abroad, a traveler discovered a venomous snake hidden in her luggage—far from its native habitat. That’s when the team at the @denverzoo, an American Humane Certified™ facility, stepped in.

Situations like this highlight how wildlife can unintentionally hitch a ride during travel, creating risks for both people and animals.

Through strong local partnerships and specialized expertise, teams were able to safely rescue and rehome the snake, protecting the community while ensuring the animal receives proper care.

What does it mean to donate 1 million pounds of litter? It’s not as obvious as you might think. Many people don’t realize it, but litter is one of the biggest resource challenges shelters face — and one of the most expensive. That’s why we’ve launched our Go Big, Go Home campaign, with the goal of donating 1 million pounds of litter to shelters nationwide.

Why does that matter? Because when shelters don’t have to spend money on litter, they can redirect those funds toward lifesaving care.

That’s the kind of impact we see from programs like the Second Chance® Grant from @AmericanHumane — which helped save Tom after he was found with severe injuries.

Our goal is simple: lighten the litter load so shelters can focus more resources on giving cats the second chances they deserve. #SecondChanceTails

Echidnas are egg-laying mammals and incredibly difficult to breed and care for. Even identifying males and females can require DNA testing, and only a small number of U.S. facilities have the expertise to support them.
 
This puggle has reached a critical stage, successfully leaving the pouch and beginning to grow its spines. A rare moment that reflects what it takes to care for one of the world’s most unique species.

The reunion was everything we hoped for. Vegas wasted no time settling in, soaking up the comfort, safety and companionship he'd been missing for so long.

Meet Noceila and her service dog Legion, a powerful partnership rooted in trust, confidence and renewed possibility. 🫡🐾

Through American Humane Society’s Pups4Patriots™, she has been partnered with Legion, a Labrador Retriever after serving in the U.S. Army for more than eight years.

Since being paired, Legion has brought joy, stability and a renewed sense of independence into Noceila’s life. Trained to interrupt nightmares, provide deep pressure therapy and support situational awareness, Legion helps her navigate daily challenges with greater confidence and ease.

“Legion has opened my world in ways I never thought possible,” Noceila shared. “Everyday challenges feel more manageable and I’ve gained the confidence to do more for myself and my family.”

Together, they recently traveled to Washington, D.C., exploring museums and navigating public transportation, an experience that once felt out of reach. We are honored to be part of Noceila and Legion’s Pups4Patriots journey and proud to support heroes on both ends of the leash. 🎖️
