Public Pool is now CLOSED --> It breaks our hearts to announce this, but unfortunately it is out of our hands.

Dear Detroit-Hamtramck Community,

It is with mixed emotions that we announce the permanent closure of Public Pool art space. Over the years, we have been immensely grateful to be a part of this vibrant and artistic community. The support from local creatives, visitors, and participants has been nothing short of inspiring.

We want to express our heartfelt appreciation to everyone who has contributed to the success of Public Pool. Your creativity, enthusiasm, and passion for the arts have left an indelible mark on our gallery. While the unforeseen circumstances with building ownership have led to this decision, we cherish the memories created and the connections forged within these walls.

Thank you, Hamtramck, for being our home and allowing us to be a part of your artistic journey. We will always hold a special place in our hearts for the incredible community that made Public Pool a truly remarkable space.

Public Pool is pleased to host Abigail Loughrey’s solo exhibition “This Water is Headed to Niagara Falls: Things I’ve Learned in Michigan”. The reception is on November 4th, from 6-10pm.The gallery will also be open Saturday, October 28th and November 11th from 1-6pm.

Abigail Loughrey is a multidisciplinary artist based in Ferndale, Michigan. Loughrey earned a B.A. in Studio Art from Stanford University and continues learning through the Art Students League of New York. She was a 2023 Ox-Bow resident and is a high school art teacher in Detroit Public Schools. Loughrey uses various media, including performance, sculpture, video, photography, and drawing. Her work explores the complications, threats, and absurdities of the human experience.

This Water is Headed to Niagara Falls: Things I’ve Learned in Michigan is a series by Abigail Loughrey that uses text, photography, and video. During her first year in Michigan, Loughrey recorded mundane bits of information that she learned and was surprised she didn’t already know. Loughrey printed the information on yard signs and then took photographs and videos of the signs posted in public.

The work asks several questions. How do we know what we know? Why did we learn it when we did? Which information will we never encounter?

🎨 Call for Art: "When Nature Calls" Exhibition 🌿

Public Pool Gallery invites artists to submit their nature-themed artwork for our upcoming exhibition, "When Nature Calls," running from November 18 to December 23. Located at 3309 Caniff St., Hamtramck, MI, our gallery provides a unique space to showcase your creative interpretations of the natural world.

🌱 Exhibition Theme:
"When Nature Calls" seeks to explore the beauty, wonder, and complexity of the natural world through art. We invite artists to reflect on their relationship with nature and its various forms, from landscapes to wildlife, flora, and beyond.

🖌️ Submission Guidelines:
- Artists of all backgrounds and styles are encouraged to submit their work.
- Submissions should be in digital format (JPEG or PNG) and sent via email to PublicPoolOpenCall@gmail.com.
- Please include your name, contact information, artwork title, dimensions, and a brief artist statement (150 words max) explaining how your artwork relates to the theme.
- no more than 10 entries
- Submission deadline: October 28, 2023
