Metal heads, man. Nicest people. This new Lamb of God record we played for the folk tonight sounds like the end of the world. No idea how you play these complicated songs twice (this, from a dope who can play nothing but Sweet Leaf (on piano, no less)). Gave away a bunch of stuff. One winner gave away the limited edition to the super maximo cd he won to another metal freak, bc the other guy “was a bigger fan”. I teared up. Not kidding. Little wins. World can be kind.

I try to fight nostalgia’s draw and I fail most days. So it goes. I’m totally down for a fast food architecture revival.

Taco Bells look like strip mall dialysis clinics. A hilarious one-word announcement adorns the marquees: BREAKFAST. McDonalds joints, in layers of sad grays, look like waiting rooms to nowhere.

Do it, Pizza Hut! Revive the pizza bar of pleasantly greasy cardboardish pies. Bring back those beds of industrial kale on ice and plop those giant plastic chefs bowls of crispy salad fixings atop it all and invite me to go town while I shove quarters into the jukebox for more Pink Floyd.

Sidebar: Last time I was in a Pizza Hut was 1998, somewhere in West Virginia. Stopped for the nostalgia-drenched pizza lunch buffet. No Floyd-stuffed juke, but there WAS a local waiting on his to-go Stromboli, arms akimbo and wearing a T-shirt that read Tickle THIS, Elmo!, with an arrow pointed at his crotch. Did not make for a very pleasant start to my retro lunch, but I did enjoy wondering how long he took that morning to decide whether he should wear his Tickle THIS, Elmo! T to Pizza Hut that day. Probably didn’t put too much thought into, I reckoned.

Ok. Hold this hilarious handbag. Now, look to the sky. Why faux Boss here look like he’s being elegantly choppered outta Da Nang? Do I know any creative directors who made the scene on this set? So many questions and it’s not even noon.

Does your teen like the color black? Does she like hagiographic photos of reprobate rock stars? In Williamsburg, do NOT sleep on dark and dingy Rocka Rolla. Pickled eggs on the bar and (Judas) Priest on the juke’! Cheapo goblets of Bud for mom and dad! Even “dive bar concepts” can be F-U-N!

If you find yourself in flyover country, try Johnnie’s Glenn Avenue Grill. Tucked away into a sleepy little pocket of lovely Grandview Heights, Ohio, Johnnie’s actual grill ceased operations in 1947. But! You can still score fun family food fare like Zero candy bars, some of a guy named Chris’ day-old tavern-style pepperoni pizza or maybe a log of leftover fried Lenten fish (Easter season only). And the drinks? Tall, generous pours that will have you cry-laughing and slurring I LOVE DIVE BARS from here to eternity.
