I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had guests come up to me completely shocked that I’m painting the moment that’s happening right in front of them.

One of the main questions I get asked is “how do you combine one background scene with a pose from another moment?” The answer? Mental photoshop! As long as the lighting is similar in the reference photos, I can often use up to four different pictures to create the perfect composition for a painting ✨

While I am the artist, it is their painting and ultimately their decisions are the ones that will make it unique to them.

I had one requirement for our honeymoon:

We had to stay in a castle in Umbria.

Castello di Monterone is a beautifully restored medieval castle just outside Perugia, perched on a hillside overlooking the Umbrian countryside. Dating back to at least the 13th century, it once served as a strategic lookout along the historic road between Perugia and Assisi, and local tradition links it to the nearby Knights Templar settlement at San Bevignate. Today, it is one of Umbria’s most atmospheric historic hotels. 🏰

Bellagio highlights:

1) boat tour from a local (with champagne) - he told us the town gossip and showed us all of the best villas on the lake

2) gelateria del borgo - best gelato I’ve ever had (I got raspberry and Matt got biscotti)

3) walking the side streets and exploring our way to the other side of the peninsula

4) walking through the historical gardens and museum of Villa Melzi

STORY TIME

I spent a small part of this wedding on the floor in the bridal suite 😅 luckily the bride and groom were so sweet and understanding. 🩷

The cause? Visiting an escape room earlier in the day. Yep. Believe it or not the heat combined with the constant up and down motion of searching an escape room for clues triggered my body’s vasovagal syncope (the fancy way of saying fainting response).

I have a condition called Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTs), which means that certain movements and environments can cause my heartbeat to speed up and my blood to rush to my feet, causing me to feel ill or faint.

If I had known the escape room was going to trigger it I never would have gone, but this condition can be unpredictable. I’m grateful for the kind bridal party @ebbergerson that gave me a place to lift up my feet until my body regulated itself, and to the kind friend that door-dashed me electrolytes on the spot @gabbygabbin

After a minor interruption, the show went on! Although this time I worked on the painting while seated (I almost always work standing). But I can definitely say that it can be a little scary when your main tool, aka my body, fails me on game day. It’s nice to know that i can paint in any circumstance under any conditions!

I recently was a guest speaker at an elementary school’s career day and one of the things I was asked is if my paintings are AI. For the sake of my sanity I decided to take this as sarcasm and not an actual question.

If there’s one thing AI never will be able to do, it’s take my job. Sure you can ask it to turn a photo into a painting, but the result is soulless and lacking any true emotion or composition. I get the joy of capturing the feeling of an entire evening on canvas in a way that I know computers can’t replicate.

And apparently the same goes for it’s ability to create reel hooks, because my goodness these were TERRIBLE.😂
