🤔 Ever wonder how your HD five-speed actually shifts? It uses a constant mesh design where gears are always touching, but “dog teeth” do the heavy lifting.
 
The Basics of “The Dog”:
 
• Engagement: There are five dog teeth, also known as drive lugs, on each gear that lock to the gear beside it on the same shaft when you shift to engage a specific gear.
 
• The Undercut: H-D five-speeds use a 4-degree undercut on these teeth. This angle acts like a hook to keep the transmission from kicking out of gear under load.
 
• The Trade-Off: Engineering is always a balance. Steeper angles (like the 10-degree cuts in racing) prevent gear pop-out but make shifting feel much harsher.
 
• The “Air Gap”: Just like a spark plug, your dog teeth need a specific gap when in neutral—typically between 0.035” and 0.164”.
 
Pro-Tip: Don’t Just Treat the Symptoms.
Precision is key for reliable shifting. If your dog tooth gap exceeds 0.080”, you’re going to start missing shifts. While checking tolerances, inspect the dogs for chipped, rounded, or broken faces. Crisp, square dogs play nice; rounded ones tend to spit out of gear.

Many riders make the mistake of replacing a “burnt” shift fork and thinking the job is done. In reality, a burnt fork is usually a symptom, not the cause. When dogs are compromised, they constantly try to push out of gear, putting massive pressure on the fork. Replacing the fork without addressing the worn dogs is only a temporary fix.

To get those tolerances back in check, you need the total package: healthy bearings, proper shifter pawl adjustment, and straight shift forks. If you’re seeing wear, replace the suspect gears and hardware together to do the job right the first time.
