🇪🇸 11.5 hours in Iberia's new A350 business class suites for just 21,250 Avios plus £153 per person. 🇲🇽

Did you know you can use your British Airways American Express Companion Voucher on Iberia and Aer Lingus, as well as British Airways?

We flew from Madrid to Mexico City in Iberia's excellent new A350 suites with sliding doors, a great lounge in Madrid and the same award winning inflight caterer used by Turkish Airlines. It was a great way to fly to one of our favourite countries for a warm and sunny Christmas.

Iberia's impressive Central and South American route network opens up all sorts of possibilities to fly to destinations BA don't and with three flights per day to CDMX, availability was fairly easy to find (Bogota, Colombia is another triple daily destination to consider).

For a flight this long it was astonishing value at just 42,500 Avios in total one way with the second person paying just the minimal fees and taxes but no Avios when applying the Companion Voucher.

We chose to purchase a separate ticket from London to Madrid both to keep the Avios cost as low as possible and avoid the UKs pesky and pricey APD Tax.

If you've struggled to find availability or a destination with BAs network to use your Companion Voucher, consider Iberia or Aer Lingus instead.

This plane could revolutionise transatlantic travel both through allowing currently seasonal routes to run year-round like Iberia is doing, or launching new routes where there is not sufficient demand for a widebody plane, like Aer Lingus is doing.

Flying this far in a small plane isn't going to be for everybody.

On the 7.5 hour flight from Madrid to Boston I found the business class seat more comfortable than I expected, and though I would prefer to face the window, I would fly this product again. A cabin of just 14 seats, all in a 1-1 configuration feels very luxe and Iberia's catering produced by award-winning caterer Do&Co is much improved.

The economy cabin seats are the same dimensions and tech as the airlines widebody planes with decent legroom, large IFE screens, charging points and larger overhead storage bins. The seat is more important than the width of he cabin IMO.

I wasn't expecting a world-class product, and I was unlucky with a last-minute equipment swap and inoperative IFE screen and WiFi, but I was still a little disappointed.

It's a shame the airline installed seats that have felt outdated for years now on a relatively new aircraft, and I didn't manage much sleep on the lie-flat bed. At least the ground experience at Heathrow was pleasant with excellent lounge options.

My biggest frustration was the glacial pace of dinner service, which stretched to almost half the flight length, and how bright the crew kept the cabin for it, making it difficult to get a solid stretch of rest.

What a wonderful surprise Kenya's capital of Nairobi was.

A vibrant, fun, colourful city with friendly locals, plenty to do and see (loved the giraffe center!), very affordable and easy to get around. Great food, great weather and boy do they love to party each night.

I walked through dimly lit backstreets alone at night without any issues at all. Everyone I interacted with had a smile and a welcome.

To say this felt different to my disastrous time in Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa many looks ago would be an understatement.

I was able to book Montreal to London for under 60,000 Aeroplan miles, though if you are traveling in peak periods, the frustrating dynamic pricing means you may be charged many times more than this.

The cabin was modern and fresh with the bells and whistles you would expect in business class (perhaps except sliding doors) and the bedding was great though the bed was a little tight around the shoulders.

Dinner was decent though breakfast was pretty grim (especially the dog-food-like "breakfast sausage" 🤢) and not waking up early for on this quick flight of just six hours.

I was unimpressed with Air Canada's premium economy product last summer however I would fly their 787 business class again as a perfectly, acceptable way to travel across the Atlantic.

I was able to book Montreal to London for under 60,000 Aeroplan miles, though if you are traveling in peak periods, the frustrating dynamic pricing means you may be charged many times more than this.

The cabin was modern and fresh with the bells and whistles you would expect in business class (perhaps except sliding doors) and the bedding was great though the bed was a little tight around the shoulders.

Dinner was decent though breakfast was pretty grim (especially the dog-food-like "breakfast sausage" 🤢) and not waking up early for on this quick flight of just six hours.

I was unimpressed with Air Canada's premium economy product last summer however I would fly their 787 business class again as a perfectly, acceptable way to travel across the Atlantic.

🇨🇦 Air Canada's latest 787 business class was... perfectly fine. ✈️
