Five Berlin positions, one question: what can a surface do?
"piccolo mondo" at the Budapester Salon brings together makers who each answer differently. Zascho Petkow — master cabinetmaker since 2001, objects between craft and contemporary design. Atelier Haußmann — metal and wood furniture with graphic, industrial silhouettes. Elisa Strozyk — wood deconstructed into thin tiles on a textile base, a material that looks and smells like wood but moves like fabric. Heike Buchfelder — feathers, glass, paper, metal, always searching for what a material can do beyond its familiar form. Polsterhans — upholstery as design practice, fabric as surface with attitude.
Tonight also: Martin Jasper opens ARCHITECTURE ICONS with his talk "Beyond Context" — the first in a new series by Berlin Design Week and Budapester Salon. RSVP required for the talk; the exhibition is accessible to talk guests only this evening.

This year, Fabian presents "Behind the Blinds": new work that asks what lies on the other side of surfaces, barriers, and half-drawn curtains. We delivered the last round of BDW catalogues today - and always take this as an opportunity to sniff out the many locations that, together, are Berlin Design Week. We came by Tylko—and found it stunning. A space that sucks you in.
Tylko means "only" in Polish. They make shelves — configured by you online, produced made-to-order, no overstock, no waste. Simple idea, well executed.
Tylko Space on Gipsstraße is something else: designed by Paul Cournet of Rotterdam studio CLOUD as a sequence of interconnected rooms, a place where design, music, and community meet.
During Berlin Design Week: on May 30, Cournet talks about what architectural practice looks like when it refuses to stay in one lane. On May 31, Kids Day — open activities and workshops with artist Isis-Maria Niedecken.

This is a Berlin story: Gabriel Massan grew up in Nilópolis, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro - not a neighborhood with easy access to classical arts & museums. He taught himself to build worlds digitally, is now famous as a digital artist and for what he calls "fictional archeology"—and chose to live in Berlin.
For Havaianas × Zalando, he turns Hallesches Haus into an art show, opening a space between Berlin and Brasil. Speculative environments where reality slips into fiction, Massan brings his singular vision to a new body of work that draws on the energy, complexity and memory of his Brasilian heritage.
The show is open May 30 3—8pm, followed by a closing party until 10pm.
