Thrilled to have found this vintage-style teardrop camper just 5 miles from home — and at a price I could actually afford last year! In March, I finally began the upcycling project I’d been dreaming of, just in time for summer adventures.

Hi, I’m Beverley — grannie to 8, always crafting, sewing, and upcycling from my garden Makery. I’ve long wanted to take on a project like this, and when the chance came, I grabbed it!

I’ll share a cost breakdown in another post, but here’s a quick look behind the scenes:
The camper was kept in a friend’s large shed, which meant I could work in all weathers (a real blessing here in the UK!). My lovely friend John helped with the gas and electrics, and two more kind friends with campervan experience offered brilliant advice.

I did a lot of research online and gathered all sorts of bits and bobs to create the cosy, stylish space I envisioned. I chose a teardrop because they’re light to tow, have just enough space for a week away, and offer the perfect mix of outdoor living with a warm and comfy sleep inside.

It already had a small solar panel, so we added a new battery to power the interior lights and sockets — three types for charging! One big expense was fitting a tow bar to our car, but someone came and did the whole job right on our driveway.

Learning how to hook it up using the jockey wheel and tow ball was a small challenge — but I got there! When set up, I stabilise the front with a couple of jacks, and now I’ve learned a canopy is essential for cooking, changing, and standing space. I also use a small tent for extra storage and a table for food prep.

Inside, I made a mattress using four foam strips on top of 2-inch insulation boards for added warmth. The wall cupboard holds all the essentials and includes light switches and charging sockets. There’s even 4 little porthole windows!

I did not want to be driving all over the country for one, wanted something vintage but not too old, and with the perfect amount of upcycled charm for me to do. This project will get me doing custom cushions, headboards, curtains, PVC leather, and upholstery.

I’m seriously excited about this one and can’t wait to see it all come together! Big thanks to my friend’s workshop for letting me use their space to bring this project to life!
