Top 10 beers to try before you die.
10. Sam Adams Utopias. This is a 28 percent beer that’s put through a process called ice distillation that concentrates the alcohol to a very high level.
9. Weihenstephaner Hefeweizen. This is a classic example of a Hefeweizen, or wheat beer, that has nice banana and clove notes, and is a light, easy drinking beer.
8. Pliny the Elder from Russian River. This is a classic example of a West Coast double IPA and one of my favorite beers on the planet.
7. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. This beer has been around for decades and it’s one of the best examples of a West Coast Pale Ale.
6. Kentucky Breakfast Stout from Founders or KBS. KBS is an imperial barrel aged stout that has chocolate and coffee added. It’s a wonderful combination of flavors.
5. Stone IPA. There are lots of IPAs out there. There are lots of West Coast IPAs out there. But Stone IPA for me is the classic example of a West Coast IPA. And if you want to know what a West Coast IPA should taste like, you should start with Stone IPA.
4.Julius from Treehouse. Again, there are lots of IPAs out there. This is a hazy New England IPA that’s very different from a West Coast style. But if you want to know what a New England IPA should taste like, you should start with Julius from Treehouse.
3. Cascade Kriek, or really anything from Cascade Brewing. They’re one of the best sour breweries in the country, maybe in the world, and if I could only try one sour beer before I die, it’d be Cascade Creek.
2. Pilsner Urquell. This is maybe the most classic example of a Czech style Pilsner. It comes in a green bottle, has a unique flavor profile, and is one of my favorite overall beers, period.
1. Westvleteren 12. This comes from a brewery in Belgium. It’s a very rare beer. It’s very difficult to get your hands on it. It’s one of the most complex, interesting, and flavorful beers that I’ve ever experienced in my entire lifetime.

Top 10 beer styles to try before you die.
10. Czech Pilsner. Clean malt with mild, floral noble hops. The perfect entryway beer for new drinkers. Pilsner Urquell is my go-to.
9. German Hefeweizen. That signature banana and clove flavor comes entirely from the yeast — a masterclass in yeast-derived flavor.
8. West Coast IPA. Leads with bitterness but backed by real hop and malt character. Pliny the Elder or Sierra Nevada Torpedo nail it.
7. Saison. Dry, effervescent, fruity, almost peppery with a rustic farmhouse character. Dupont Saison is a must-try.
6. New England IPA. Juicy hop flavor with minimal bitterness. Heady Topper or anything from Treehouse.
5. Rauchbier. Smoked malt gives an almost bacon-like character. Rare in the US, but one of a kind.
4. Belgian Quad. Maybe the most complex style on the planet. Dark fruit, chocolate, roasty notes, and 9-14% ABV.
3. Barleywine. No wine involved, but it ages beautifully for years. Big toffee, caramel, and dried fruit from the malt.
2. Imperial Stout. Jet black, high alcohol, intense roasty chocolate and espresso. Bourbon County and Founders KBS are top tier.
1. Lambic/Gueuze. Spontaneously fermented with wild yeast, aged in oak for years. Tart, funky, complex. Cantillon is the pinnacle.
What's your top style? Drop it below.
We love all the breweries here in Kansas City, and it doesn’t bother us one bit if you want to go to a different one every now and then #kcbeer #craftbeer #beer
I get it — $7 can sound like a lot for a pint of beer.
But here’s what that pint actually has to cover before a brewery like ours ever sees “profit.” 🍺
For a $7 pint, industry averages break down pretty close to what we see at Border:
Ingredients: about 11%, or $0.77
Labor: about 24%, or $1.68
Rent + equipment: about 11%, or $0.77
Utilities: about 5%, or $0.35
Insurance, taxes, licensing, admin, marketing, spillage, and all the random unglamorous stuff: about 14%, or $0.98
That leaves roughly 35%, or about $2.45 per pint.
And that’s for beer sold directly in our taproom.
Once beer goes through distribution, the margins get much thinner because there are more hands involved: packaging, shipping, storage, distributor costs, retailer markup, and all the logistics of getting beer across the city.
That’s why I always say one of the best ways to support your local brewery is to visit the taproom. Not only does that pint help the brewery more directly, but you’re also usually getting the freshest version of the beer right from the source.
So to everyone who has come into our Kansas City taproom, grabbed a pint, brought a friend, or told somebody about us: thank you. Seriously.
Cheers 🍻
Pure alcohol, whiskey, wine, and beer… which one has the most calories?
The answer is closer than most people think, especially when you compare them as standard drinks.
In U.S. public health guidance, a standard drink contains 14 grams, or about 0.6 fluid ounces, of pure alcohol. That alcohol alone contributes about 98 calories.
Here’s the side-by-side:
🧪 Pure alcohol / ethanol: about 98 calories🥃 Whiskey, 1.5 oz at 40% ABV: about 98–100 calories🍷 Dry wine, 5 oz pour: about 120–125 calories🍺 Beer, 16 oz at 4% ABV: about 140–160 calories
So yes, beer and wine usually have more calories than straight spirits when you compare one standard drink to another.
But the big takeaway is this: most of the calories are coming from the alcohol itself.
Not the bubbles. Not the malt. Not just the “beer carbs.”
The ethanol is doing most of the work. 🍻

Can beer freeze in your freezer? Yep. Absolutely. And sometimes very dramatically. 🍺❄️
Here’s the science: beer is mostly water — usually around 90–95% — with a much smaller amount of ethanol. Ethanol lowers the freezing point of a liquid, which is why higher-proof spirits like vodka or gin can usually hang out in your home freezer without turning solid.
Your freezer is typically around 0°F, which is plenty cold enough to freeze water. Pure ethanol freezes way, way colder — around -173°F — but beer doesn’t have nearly enough alcohol to bring its freezing point below your freezer temp.
That’s why a beer can freeze, expand, push out the cap, crack the can, or fully explode if you forget about it. Ask me how I know. 😅
A freezer is great for a quick chill, but set a timer. I usually recommend 15–20 minutes, and I wouldn’t push much past 30 unless you’re trying to create a very sticky beer slushie situation.
Beer science: useful, delicious, and occasionally messy.
Life could have been worse, at least you don’t have a beer allergy 🍺 #beer
Not all drinks hydrate the same.
A drink can contain water and still be a weak hydration choice depending on the alcohol, caffeine, sugar, and electrolyte content. Here’s the list from worst to best:
9️⃣ AlcoholAlcohol is a diuretic, meaning it makes you lose more fluid by suppressing the hormone that helps your body retain water.
8️⃣ Soda / soft drinksThese contain water, but the sugar, caffeine, and carbonation make them a poor hydration option.
7️⃣ CoffeeCoffee has a lot of caffeine, but it also has plenty of water, so it can still contribute to hydration.
6️⃣ TeaTea is similar to coffee, but usually lower in caffeine, which makes it a little more hydrating.
5️⃣ Fruit juiceReal fruit juice has some natural electrolytes, which helps, but it still comes with a decent amount of natural sugar.
4️⃣ Coconut waterCoconut water has more electrolytes and is especially high in potassium, making it a stronger hydration choice.
3️⃣ MilkThis surprises people, but milk has electrolytes, protein, and fat, which can help your body hold onto fluid longer.
2️⃣ Oral rehydration solutionsDrinks like Pedialyte are designed with the right balance of sugar and electrolytes to rehydrate you quickly.
1️⃣ WaterStill the standard. Simple, effective, and the baseline everything else gets measured against.
The main takeaway: hydration isn’t just about what you drink — it’s about how your body absorbs and retains it.
