Have to brag on my better half. Mary Ward was a soccer savant. Her teams (‘98 ‘99) and coach Izzy Hernandez were inducted last night into the Broughton Athletics Hall of Fame. They were state champions these years and she was the leading scorer both years. She went onto play at Clemson and professionally with the Raleigh Wings (Raleigh’s pro team before the Courage). The pro team is already in the NC Soccer HOF as of a few years ago. Congrats to her and all of her teammates!!! First time I’d been back to Broughton since ‘97 - what a trip!!

I love music. This one is out today in the world. I started writing the material for ‘Ask the Question’ in the fall of 2024 - with the loose intention of it being the next Hot at Nights record (my creative compositional outlet since 2010). Recently I had acquired an archtop guitar - a jazz box - first one I had owned since the ES-175 I bought and sold some 25 years ago. The sound of it is clean and punchy, and unprocessed it just has a voice. The tone of this instrument really began to steer these compositions. It became evident this material was going to be a 6-string guitar record of my own. Big decision considering I hadn’t released any music under my own name in 20 years. And also that I spend 98% of my time working on other peoples’ music. Come December 2024 I was ready to get these things out of demo-land. I was fortunate to get some of my nearest and dearest friends - Matt Douglas, Matt McCaughan, Sam Fribush, and Cameron Ralston into the studio to help flesh these things out. Good decision. We spent two days at Overdub Lane in Durham, NC - my trusty home-base studio for the past 10 years. I can’t say enough things about these guys and their abilities - they brought these compositions to life in a way I had never imagined possible. The end result is a bit of a collage of what we did over those two days - some full tunes, some interludes, some sections, warts and all. I’m super proud of it and I hope some folks might enjoy it as well. Listen wherever you listen. Link in my bio. Album photos by the great Graham Tolbert (@grahamtlbrtfoto).
