I didn’t know that coffee would turn into lunches and dinners with Vassilis and Maria in their restaurant, evenings of wine and raki, and a hands-on cooking class in their kitchen. (Maria’s cooking remains the best food I’ve had on this island — and that’s saying a lot since Cretan cuisine is 👌.)

For a traveller on her own in a quiet mountain village, their warm welcome meant so much, and I vowed I would come back one day, not just for dinner but for an actual stay at the hotel (with several dinners 😉).
