woodland creatures forever

I’ve taken the week to this about the impact of this tour and my experience and I still don’t think I can come up with something that accurately describes it all.

@pulsesva was the first band to pay me and the first band to offer me a tour (timing did not allow). this led to considering that I -might- be able to just do this photo thing. It shifted my perspective from “photo is this thing that fills my soul and I’d love to be able to pursue it but I’m chicken” to “I can try to make my dreams come true and the sky will not fall if I fail”.

I picked up a DSLR for the first time in 2009. I shot my first show in 2011. I started a publication and got my first press credentials in 2013. I watched a lot of the photographers who got their start with me and after me eclipse me in record time. I took breaks, a lot of them. I thought about selling my camera, a lot. I cycled between frustrated, jealous, and bitter.

my big epiphany came in an otherwise normal convo with friends (shout out @angelsanonymouspodcast) in July 2024. my established 11 year career felt like it was closing in on me - I was burnt out and miserable, I had no work/life balance, and I had no idea what to do for the rest of my life. I just knew it wasn’t this.

quitting didn’t immediately fix me. it still hasn’t. but it did force me to exit a comfort zone that has stopped being comfortable, and challenge myself to grow in ways I never could have imagined. It’s been less than two years and I’ve toured 3 times, visited a bunch of cities I’d never been to, worked 2 (soon to be 3) weddings, learned a lot about to be a sole proprietor and how NOT to be a sole proprietor, and made countless friends along the way.

all because @pulsesva told me that I’m good and I deserve to get paid for this. and that little spark grew into a flame that gets stronger with time.
