NEW MUGSHOT: The new mugshot for Tanner Horner has been released after he was sentenced to death on Tuesday for the death of 7-year-old Athena Strand. He pleaded guilty to capital murder for her death the day the trial was expected to begin.

FBI Director Kash Patel says that the Pima County Sheriff’s Office kept them out of the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie. She went missing in Arizona on Feb. 1, 2026, and has not been seen since. Patel said the FBI was excluded from the investigation for four days before they got access to information. Patel also claimed that the FBI offered to send DNA evidence to its lab in Quantico, but the sheriff’s office sent it to a private lab in Florida. In a statement, the Pima County Sheriff's Department said, "Sheriff Nanos responded to the scene the night of the incident, providing immediate local leadership and oversight. A member of the FBI Task Force was also notified and present at that scene, working alongside our personnel. The FBI was promptly notified by both our department and the Guthrie family. While the FBI Director was not on scene, coordination with the Bureau began without delay."
After roughly two and a half hours of deliberations, a Texas jury sentenced child killer and kidnapper Tanner Horner to death on Tuesday afternoon. Following the verdict, the family of 7-year-old Athena Strand delivered emotional statements, reflecting on the final moments they shared with her.

Lee Mongerson Gilley, 39, is facing a capital murder charge in connection with the death of his pregnant wife, Christa Bauer Gilley, in Texas. On Monday, Lee Gilley’s attorney said his client had cut off his ankle monitor and then boarded a plane to Canada. He then reportedly flew from Canada to Italy, where he was apprehended by authorities. Gilley reportedly told them that he was seeking asylum in the country because he was being “wrongfully prosecuted” and thought he might get the death penalty. Charging documents say that Gilley applied pressure to his wife’s neck and upper back and “intentionally and knowingly" caused her death.
Seventeen-year-old Thomas Stein was found guilty by a Florida jury on all counts, including felony murder and three counts of attempted robbery, in the killing of 15-year-old Kayla Rincon-Miller. He is scheduled to be sentenced at a later date.
