Alltså den här boken! Hav + Tove = perfekt kombination vet ju alla som läst muminböckerna eller hennes andra skönlitterära verk (eller för den delen sett foton från hennes liv, tagit del av intervjuer eller hennes målningar). Författarna tar fäste just vid den betydelse som havet, skärgården och öar haft i Janssons barndom, liv och konstnärskap och det blir precis så trevlig läsning som man kan förvänta sig. En stark rekommendation för sommarens varma dagar (följt av Tove Janssons ’Anteckningar från en Ö’ om livet på Klovharun, också ett måste om man alls är nyfiken på temat).

En samling berättelser som skildrar kvinnor i olika sociala sammanhang men alltid i ett slags underläge - utifrån klass, ålder, utbildningsnivå etc. Här berörs skönhetsideal och relationer, konstvärlden och bostadsmarknaden. I ’Fiskaren’ av Linda Segtnan följer vi Magdalena Grip som just flyttat från Stockholm till en liten ort i Småland. Vi får intrycket av att hon (och hennes man, jägarmästaren Johan) snarare flytt från något än till något. Snart visar det sig att Magdalena bär på en last - länge är det oklart om hon själv lider av någon form av psykos eller om hon faktiskt är hemsökt av en ande. I det nya hemmet hörs knackningar i väggar och dörrar men de kan inte föranledas till en mänsklig varlese. Husets invånare - Magdalena, Johan, deras huskamrat bokhållaren Becker och jungfru Annie - blir alla drabbade av den skugga som hänger över huset och gården. Det märks att Linda Segtnan är en historiker för jag trodde helt och fullt på att det här var en memoar och inte en historisk roman; jag såg Magdalena och hennes förtvivlan över att tappa greppet av verkligheten och kontroll så tydligt framför mig. Den känsla av ensamhet som flytten inneburit, isolationen som förstärks av vintern och Johans distans, hennes avsaknad av meningsfulla relationer överhuvudtaget - de som betytt mycket för henne i Stockholm verkar inte nå henne där hon nu befinner sig. En spännande, gotisk roman om sorg, ensamhet, och gränslandet mellan de levande och de döda.

Not going to lie, this holiday season has been tough. The first Christmas without Tyson has been filled with sadness and longing. But it’s not been all bad - I’m grateful for days spent with family, eating sweets and walking in crispy winter weather, watching films and reading good books, knitting and resting. 2025 will for better or worse be a memorable year, I’m going to try to remember it with love for the precious time we got.

Just finished reading: Tre Öar, Sophia Jansson 📖

Den som älskar mumin kan inte ha undgått att se rollen Sophia Jansson haft i att förvalta Toves (och Lasses) arv de senaste årtiondena. Därför var jag såklart nyfiken på en memoar om Sophias liv, hennes pappa Lasse Jansson och såklart hela Jansson släktet i längden. Tre öar är ett minnesprojekt - Sophia skriver ömt och färgstarkt om egna minnen från sin uppväxt, sin pappa och sin mamma Nita som blivit något av en undangömd gestalt i Jansson historierna. Hennes minnen kompletteras av pusselbitar från de som nu är döda - i deras fotografin, brev, och andra skrifter finner hon information som förändrar hennes perspektiv på sin familj och sin egen historia. En bok som är fylld av kärlek, sorg, glädje och ett driv att få denna röst hörd. Läs den! Och lägg den på julklappslistan för mumin fansen i ditt liv.

I’m back to work after the summer vacation. One of the books I read while off was Being Ace. I rarely read short story collections, much less anthologies. But I was immediately intrigued when I heard of Being Ace edited by Madeline Dyer, an anthology of ”queer, trans, femme, and disabled stories of asexual love and connection”. Reading this collection of ace-spec stories (written by ace-spec writers) feels like a warm embrace. Being seen/seeing yourself reflected in media might seem like a trivial thing, but it can truly change not just our perception of ourselves but also change the way we see the world, life’s potential, different ways of living a fullfilling life.

This is a collection of YA stories varied in genre and tone, my favorites were surprisingly the more fantastical and sci-fi leaning stories. If you’re looking for more ace writing this is a great book to pick up to find new authors and of course, enjoy the stories within.
