Working on HEAD | THORAX | ABDOMEN over the last couple of months has been a sort of perfectly timed shift after the stretch of Mum’s illness and passing last year where there wasn’t much room for anything else.

Being back in a room working on a show with talented, generous, passionate and slightly unhinged old friends and new, all trying to make something interesting together, has reminded me why I love doing this sort of stuff in the first place.

Apparently it’s hard to stay in your own head when you have to learn someone else’s lines.

Also… a nice review doesn’t hurt.

Entering my “dark wizard” epoch…

My beautiful, amazing, loving, superstar Mum left us on Tuesday.
She was one of the warmest, most accepting and generous people I have ever known, and having heard many stories from her friends over the last few days, I know I’m not the only one who felt that way.
After a devastating cancer diagnosis six months ago, on top of her struggles with degenerative vision loss, she approached setback after setback with bravery, humour and a determination not to lose her independence.
She has always been there for me with unconditional love and support. Even while dealing with her own pain, her limitless compassion meant she was constantly working to ensure everyone else’s wellbeing around the situation.
It’s hard to escape the feeling she should be here with us. Chatting, laughing, smiling and loving life. One day she was. And the next she wasn’t.
My life will never be the same. I will miss her every single day.
This photo is the last one I took of her just a week ago. While she should have been resting and letting us look after her, she pushed through the pain, her mobility issues and the vision loss and sneakily got up and made me my favourite creamy mushrooms for breakfast. They were amazing. As usual. Thanks for everything, Mumma.

Went to see the new production of Hair with this pair of old hippies I call my parents. They saw the original Sydney production in 1971 on their way back from their honeymoon, and were excited to re-experience the trip with their long-haired son.

While now members of the oft-maligned Boomer generation, my parents have never strayed from the “counter-culture” values celebrated in the show such as acceptance, empathy and equality (they were less about the drugs, I’m led to believe).

They’ve never stopped fighting for a better world… standing up for the marginalised and vulnerable people, trying to change systems that are sub-standard or unfair, or advocating for equality or environmental protection. In one way or another, they have both been instrumental in helping people and driving positive societal change.

Thankfully, they have also resisted age-related intolerance or disenchantment and remain as vocal and passionate about these ideals as when they first saw Hair 54 years ago.

If I can make even a fraction of the good that these two have, I’ll be delighted.
