Last week’s graduation was my first since becoming Chair of the Board of Trustees for Massachusetts College of Art and Design—my alma mater and only independent public art college in the nation. It was a truly heartfelt moment.

Congratulations to our 2026 Godine Award recipient, Ted Landsmark, and our honorary degree recipients, Peter Wolf, Sarah Elizabeth Lewis, and Abelardo Morell. Their extraordinary contributions to art, design, and civic leadership are a powerful inspiration to our graduates as they begin their own paths as changemakers.

@bostonfdn recently made a commitment to reshape its work around equity, and they partnered with none other than our team at Proverb to drive the message, identity and image for this important work. Today, we get to unveil that bold and dynamic brand.
Thank you to The Boston Foundation for working to dismantle systemic and structural inequities, and the team for making our city better one campaign at a time. Let’s go, Boston! Let’s keep moving forward.

As the team will tell you, Proverb started with a bare-bones business plan that consisted of this: “Do good work, and try to find s’more.”

Today, I’m grateful – so deeply thankful for Proverb’s talented vendors, wonderful clients, and my incredible team– to be able to share this video illustrating Proverb’s work. Where do we go from here? There’s no telling, truly.

Once upon a time, I was an art school graduate who entered the workforce during the postwar recession of the '90s. I was a Black man in Boston, so you could say the odds were stacked against me. But, if I could, I would tell him that it can all work out.
 
I would tell him to keep dreaming big, David vs. Goliath dreams, because if you keep at it, if you listen to the stories of your community, if you stand up for them, and if you act from a place of heart and of soul, you can help change a city.
