This was simultaneously the most difficult poem I’ve ever written and the most meaningful. It’s an ode to my mama.I’d written other poems about her and in her honor, but she never got to hear this one. Never got to see me perform this.
It is the centerpiece of my one-man show, Reverie in Black. And I was a walking, talking ball of grief.I don’t remember this actual performance. it was right around Mother’s Day.. I just know that my mama, Triccilla Brown, was with me. She gave me the strength to even stand, to open my mouth.So, I guess she has heard this poem.Today is her birthday.

Happy Birthday, Mama. You the baddest.Always will be. I love you. Always will.
