This 1963 painting by Nicolás Moreno (Mexico, 1923–2012), titled Ladrillera, reflects his early-1960s focus on documenting Mexico’s environmental transformation. A muted palette depicts an active brickworks, smoke belching across the background and obscuring the volcanic peaks of the Valley of Mexico—typical of his work from this period. Moreno captures the reality of ecological destruction and urban sprawl, what he described as “the poverty, misery, and beauty of the land.” With a compositional nod to Nicolas Poussin’s 17th-century paintings of classical ruins, he nonetheless rejects romanticism and any idealized landscape tied to national identity, pursuing instead a singular documentary realism.

Thank you to everyone who attended the opening of ‘Paisaje’ at @galeriepepe last week. Special thanks to Pepe for so enthusiastically agreeing for me to curate this exhibition and to Elizabeth Calzado @robinreno for her help in making it a reality.
This 1917 painting by Pedro Figari titled ‘Envidia‘ (jealousy) was made after the Art School that he established in Montevideo in Uruguay, was closed by the government that were unhappy with his ‘new ideas’. It is part of his ‘Piedras expresivas’ (expressive rocks) series that he made when he was furious about how he had been treated and he embodied each image with his feelings about the situation.

Christmas Day 1956 marks the day when the German language Swiss writer was found dead in the snow a short walk from the asylum ( “I am not here to write, but to be mad” ) he had been living in for many years.
He grew up in Biel in Switzerland.
When I was invited to do an exhibition of my work @kbcb_kunsthaus_centredart by @lunnfelicity in 2012 I made a painting that was for me a portrait of Robert Walser- painted in grisaille. Based on a Cezanne painting and the frontispiece engraving from the original printing of John Bunyan’s pilgrim’s progress 1678 - the painting was then again shown in 2014 in the exhibition ‘Paying No attention | Notice Everything Robert Walser and the Visual Arts @aargauerkunsthaus .

I’m not entirely convinced that Instagram remains the right place for sharing personal reflections. I have posted about my brother’s death before, but anniversaries have their own way of resurfacing memories, and today marks a decade since Hal Dalwood died. This photograph was taken amidst the standing stones in Carnac, France, in the early seventies. He can’t have been more than fourteen, yet even then he was deeply committed to what would become his lifelong obsession—archaeology.
His appetite for reading was extraordinary. I often thought I wasn’t much of a reader myself, but looking back, I realise that the time we spent in Penzance in Cornwall was probably the most concentrated period of reading I’ve ever known. My father ran a bookshop that stayed open all summer, and during school holidays Hal and I would sit upstairs above the shop, lying end to end on an old couch, and lose ourselves in books from morning until night, for days on end. There wasn’t much else to occupy us then, but now I’m grateful for those quiet hours and for having an older brother who showed me that reading could be a way of life.

In October 1982 I went with several other painting studentsfrom St Martins School of Art to visit the Philip Guston Late Paintings exhibition, curated by Nick Serota at the Whitechapel Gallery in London. We wereexcited to finally see the Guston paintings from the 70s that had never been shown before in the U.K. Therewas also a lecture that day by Peter De Francia on Guston. I rememberhim mentioning Guston’s early work that included a mural in Morelia in Mexico- David Alfaro Siqueiros had met both Guston and Reuben Kadish in LA and invited them to come to Morelia and paint the mural ( Guston was 21 ). So somehow in my head the connection was planted.
Tosee the Mural finally restored after It had been hidden by a false wall until rediscovery in 1973was an emotional experience - the muscular composition , the De Chirico, Giotto and Mantegna references along with images that would sustain Guston throughout his latercareer and and .. the indignant rage of the work was overwhelming..

Lord Lucan the well known English noble andplayboy disappeared on November 7th, 1974 after murdering his family nanny, and attempting to kill his estranged wife. He was not seen again after that night, but left a blood-stained letter for his brother-in-law. He was declared by a coronial inquest dead in abstentia in 1999.After his disappearance he waspurportedly spotted all over the world.I made this painting in 2010 just after my mother had been sectioned and administered electric shock treatment. The locked fish tank was from the waiting room…

October 20th marks the birth ofArthur Rimbaud- I made this painting Double portrait in 2014 based on the time that Rimbaud and Verlaine lived for several months at 8 Great George Street ( now Royal collegeStreet)in Camden in London in 1873. Their cohabitation was brief and chaotic but Rimbaud still managed to write parts of Une Saison en Enfer ( A season in Hell) while living there.
