I recently discovered an image of an enamel-painted Staffordshire figure called ‘The Worshipper’, by Ralph Wood (active 1782-1795). It inspired the thought “What’s the point of praying” and an impulse to create my own version. What started as a desperate caricature became an opportunity for deeper reflection, and I have found that the act of making has offset some of the negative impulses I feel right now.
