BREAKING: Four animal rescuers have been charged with felony grand theft for rescuing Phoebe and Celia, two baby goats who were sick with respiratory infections on a Meyenberg goat dairy that supplies to Whole Foods.

An investigation in the spring of 2025 found that sick goats are denied adequate medical care, often either killed or left to slowly die. Reports to the Kings County District Attorney’s Office and other local law enforcement had led to no animal welfare enforcement actions.

When former ER Veterinary Technician Carla Cabral found Phoebe and Celia, emaciated and in respiratory distress, she knew they were at risk of ending up in Meyenberg’s ever-growing pile of dead mothers and babies.

Nearly a year later, the Kings County DA has decided to use its resources not to protect the goats still suffering from neglect and cruelty, but to prosecute the compassionate individuals who tried to stop it. The defendants are Carla, Sally, Joe and Taj.

Lifelong animal rescuer Zoe Rosenberg was just sentenced to 90 days in custody for her rescue of four suffering chickens from Perdue’s Petaluma Poultry slaughterhouse. She is ordered to turn herself in one week from today on December 10th. She is not eligible to even apply for alternative detention for the first 30 days. For giving Poppy, Aster, Ivy, and Azalea their freedom, Zoe has lost hers.

This jail sentence could be life-threatening for Zoe because of her type 1 diabetes and gastroparesis, which require specific medical equipment and care. When Zoe was initially arrested, the jail threatened to take away her insulin pump. Despite this risk to Zoe’s life and the nonviolent nature of her actions, Sonoma County Judge Kenneth Gnoss nevertheless sentenced her to jail. Zoe’s legal team, led by the Animal Activist Legal Defense Project (@AALDP_DU), filed a formal notice of appeal today to appeal her conviction on several grounds, including that the court denied the necessity defense even though Zoe’s actions were necessary to save Poppy, Aster, Ivy, and Azalea from imminent harm. But appeals take a long time and Zoe needs our help now.

“In late February, animal rights activists flew a drone over a calf ranch in the Central Valley and watched as workers kicked and punched the animals.

Footage reviewed by The Times shows a worker pulling a calf by the nose with pliers.

It shows two workers removing the budding horns of a calf with a hot iron. While one held the frightened animal’s head, the other — wearing a sweatshirt with an image of the Virgin Mary — applied the iron to a horn. After a puff of smoke, the calf fell to its side, appearing motionless.”

Chester spent two years in a small, wire cage on Ridglan Farms. Just three days ago, he thought he’d be there forever. Now, he’s with me in California experiencing comfort, safety, and freedom for the first time in his life.
