For as long as I can remember, Peru has been on my bucket list of countries to visit. When I got into hiking several years ago, I always said that one day I wanted to go hiking in Peru and get a photo of me on a hike surrounded by alpacas. When it came time to plan my trip to Peru, I specifically wanted to do this trek because I knew chances would be high of me getting that opportunity.

As someone who always dreads seeing summer go, over the last few years I’ve tried to make an effort to lean into the change and take it as an opportunity to slow down, rest, and get cozy.

As a result, I’ve found that one of my favorite things to do this time of year is stay in cute little cabins like this one by @stay.pnw. It’s such a fun way to embrace the season and just enjoy the slower pace that comes with those shorter, chillier days 😌🤎

“Something will happen to me on Desolation Peak… I can feel it.” – Jack Kerouac, 1956

This was my third year in a row securing permits to backpack Desolation Peak. However, each year prior, fires, smoke, and the unpredictability of life always forced me to cancel. This year, I was finally able to make it happen.

Getting there is no small feat. The climb itself is grueling, but even reaching the trailhead demands effort: either an 18-mile approach on foot, or via water by renting a boat or hiring a water taxi. We opted for the water taxi.

As we were dropped off at the trailhead, the water taxi captain pointed towards a faint haze in the distance. He mentioned that a fire had sparked there a couple days earlier, and that the winds that evening might enable it to pick up and spread further.

He wasn’t wrong.

As we approached the fire lookout several hours later, we could see plumes of smoke filling the sky. Upon reaching the lookout, we were greeted by Jim (pictured above), who has manned this lookout for years. He told us he had never seen a fire this close to this lookout.

The fire, which was sparked by lightning, is now named the Perry Fire. Jim was the first to spot it. He quickly reported it and has since served as a vital link, relaying updates to helicopters and fire crews by radio as we stood beside him. Between calls, he expressed concern that federal budget cuts could soon jeopardize his role - eliminating the unique and necessary line of defense against forest fires that it provides.

Being able to witness an active fire lookout in action was the last thing I expected when finally making this long-awaited trip. However, it turned out to be the most unforgettable part of the journey, and something I won’t soon forget.

The foxes of San Juan Island 🧡

I’ve been dreaming of capturing fox photos for years now, so this weekend was such a treat ☺️

The first photo was taken early morning when I happened to turn a corner to see a mama fox leading her two young kits out from their den into a sunny spot in the field. About a minute later, she looked up towards the sky and bolted forward while making growling noises. I looked up and immediately saw a bald eagle swoop down in attempt to snatch one of the kits. It missed, and the mama ran back into the den, with her two kits slowly waddling behind her. The eagle then came back to make a second attempt at snatching a kit before it made it back to the den, but missed again. Both kits made it safely back to the den 🥹

That moment was THE wildest display of nature I’ve ever witnessed with my own eyes, and it was so fascinating to get this glimpse into their lives. Selfishly, I’m also so glad I didn’t have to witness a fox kit be taken from its mama 🫶🏼
