50th Cayman parrot rehabilitated and released!
Hurley, the 50th Cayman parrot to be rehabilitated by the Department of Environment in partnership with the @caymanparrotsanctuary was released in full health just in time for World Parrot Day this Sunday May 31st!
Since its opening in 2020, the Cayman Parrot Sanctuary has accommodated Cayman Parrots in need of care and rehabilitation.Every bird that comes into our care has a different story. Some have been hit by cars, some are injured in territorial fights, while others have endured storms or hit power lines. The majority of rescue cases, however, have been surrendered or confiscated parrots, often young birds, that have been taken illegally from their nests and parents' care.
Each and every parrot receives specialised, individual care at the Parrot Sanctuary through close collaboration with veterinarians and Department of Environment staff.
Rehabilitation takes time, patience, and teamwork — from medical treatment and safe housing to careful monitoring and preparation for release. The goal is always the same: to give each parrot the best possible chance of returning to the wild where it belongs.
Fifty releases are more than a statistic. It represents resilience, collaboration, and a shared commitment to protecting Cayman’s parrots, one bird at a time.

Meet our stylish snails! 🐚
The DoE has partnered with @shedd_aquarium research scientist Dr. Andy Kough on a new short-term study investigating the movement behaviour of queen conch around Grand Cayman. DoE Environmental Management Officer, Steph Gunby is leading the project to help us understand this crucial natural resource better.
Several queen conch have been temporarily fitted with acoustic tags and biologger backpacks that allow us to relocate them over time and record their hopping behavior as they move about. These data help us quantify activity rates and home ranges around the island and describe differences between conch-gregations 😉 in protected areas and open zones.
If you spot a conch looking a little "extra" over the next few weeks, don't worry, leave them be. They're participating in science!

DoE researcher presents on human impacts on shark populations at Sharks International Conference
DoE shark researcher, Anne Veeder presented to scientists from around the globe about the human impacts on sharks observed in the Cayman Islands. Her presentation entitled "Using long-term citizen science monitoring and Covid-19 regulations to evaluate human impact on shark populations in the Cayman Islands" explores how DoE's Sharklogger Network citizen science programme has helped gather cirtical data about shark species, abundance and movements in the Cayman Islands. Another important human impact was explored during the Covid-19 pandemic when tourism activities were suspended and an increase in Caribbean reef shark abundance was recorded.
Sharing both knowledge and methodologies with the international scientific community is an important opportunity and significant achievement for scientists.
Congratulations Anne!

🦈 DoE scientist presents at Sharks International Conference
DoE's Shark Research Manager, Dr Johanna Kohler, presented to a full house yesterday at the Sharks International Conference in Sri Lanka.
Her presentation "Deep-sea discoveries from the Cayman Islands, Caribbean Sea: First records of deep-sea sharks and recurrence of a school of scalloped hammerheads" was well received by the hundreds of shark researchers from around the globe in attendance looking to learn form the successes of Cayman's shark conservation efforts.
Achievements such as 10 years of shark protection in the Cayman Islands, new shark species recorded in local waters and the discovery of a school of scalloped hammer head sharks - thought to be locally extinct -offered an inspiring glimpse into what can be achieved with passion, perseverance - and some cool technology!
Congrats Dr Johanna!

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
