I started this as a ‘quick’ back anatomy study from this great @tchallahawk photo of @ruby.lila , but was having so much fun it ended up going a little further! 😂

I feel I’ll come back to it again at some point, as there are some things about the execution of the design I’d still like to play with, but just wanted to put it down for a bit and let it live by itself out in the world as it is before I do.

Done in @procreate on the iPad

(Fun anatomy fact, the two darker shadow indentations by the shoulder blades are the ‘Triangles of Auscultation’ (band name anyone?) formed by the gap between the lats, the edge of the scapula, and the trapezius, and that relative thinness of muscles there gives a clearer path to the rib cage, which is why the doctor sticks their cold stethoscope there while performing an examination (or ‘auscultation’) of your lungs! :) )

I had never heard of Wautier before I saw this piece, so am still learning about her, but if nothing else so far, she knew her fabric and her lighting! The study was pretty fun (not just because there is a bench in that room to draw from) but I definitely realised too late that all the colours had very similar values when drawn in monochrome, and didn’t have the energy at that point to go back and differentiate them from each other properly. Next time 😉

In Flux - between Monica and Bregna there’s always time for bathroom selfies…

This photo, from @izzybizzyspider , was definitely giving me something of @peter_k_chung ‘s Aeon Flux, so playing with some loose and expressive vs detailed and studied here is a little (very loose) homage to whatever I remember of the clashing ideologies of Monica vs Bregna/ Flux vs Goodchild in the MTV series.
The battle definitely continued into the drawing process to find the happy medium between overworked vs under-finished, and while I miss things I tried in both directions, it was a fun process and it ended up like this.

I really enjoyed this drawing and playing with how large areas of almost solid value can be messed around with to both suggest form, but also be part of the design. There is more I feel I could do to it to take that further, but as I currently feel some vagueness in how I plan to do that, and don't fancy over-rendering it, I shall park it here for now and get on with something else :)

I started this drawing so long ago I couldn’t even find the reference image again initially… I had started it, enjoyed it, but then had worked it beyond the ‘spark’ where it was still fun and still expressing and exploring what drew me to the original in the first place, and so I parked it. Sometimes when I revisit these limbo drawings I still look at them and feel ‘nope’, but today, happily, was a good day to see what the sticking point was and the path from there to finishing it off :)
