Missive Bead is a grid-based typeface designed to distill legible display serif forms into a systematic language for beaded embroidery. The grid framework was designed to accommodate the proportions of a “bugle bead”, a type of embroidery bead that is longer than it is wide.

The grid is composed of a horizontal, vertical, and 15-degree diagonal. The inclusion of the diagonal axis allows the natural flow of Missive Serif (Missive Bead’s companion style), to remain present in the structure of the beaded version.

This was an incredibly fun system to develop as I started my amateur beading practice last year. Beading has been a great way to reduce my screen time while still exercising creative play and exploration with typography.

Buying the V0.1 at a discounted price now means you get access to all updates of the typeface in the future. More weights and glyphs to come soon.

One of the biggest highlights of this year was getting a chance to work with @ucllc and @brandnewbyucllc on a custom version of my typeface, Stringer, to be used in the visual language for the 2025 Brand New Conference. The result of this customization was Stringer Stencil 🛠️

This year’s @bnconf conference was hosted in Pittsburgh, PA. Designed by @ucllc founders, Armin Vit and Bryony Gomez-Palacio, the identity is rooted in the steel-heavy past of Pittsburgh, demonstrated through thoughtfully selected typographic choices.

It’s clear to see how much work Bryony and Armin put into the design of the conference through the quality of applications—most of them being custom assembled, painted, or made in some degree by the founders themselves.
