When Frederick Douglass escaped slavery, he first lived as a free man in New Bedford, Massachusetts.⁠
⁠
Douglass lived in the home of Black abolitionists Nathan and Polly Johnson. Their house still stands in New Bedford today and was designated a National Historical Landmark. ⁠
⁠
While the home is under restoration, visitors can view the outside of the home in the Abolition Row Historic District, which is also the location of Abolition Row Park, where a bronze statue of Frederick Douglass is located.⁠
