Feather Friendly
Feather Friendly® Bird Collision Deterrent >15Msqft installed globally Commercial & Residential, approved by @americanbirdconservancy #FeatherFriendly

Paul recently joined @sparkbirdproject podcast with Jenn Lodi-Smith and Janet McNally for an engaging conversation about his love for birds and conservation.
He shares an early memory of seeing an owl while cross-country skiing in Ontario, and the long-ranging impact of a moment like that.
The conversation moves from those personal beginnings into the work Feather Friendly does now to reduce bird-glass collisions and help people understand that this is a critical conservation issue.
It’s a wonderful listen, and a great reminder that for many of us, caring about birds usually begins with one moment that stays with you for life.

Last Saturday at the World Migratory Bird Day Celebration we distributed 21 Feather Friendly® Bird Collision Deterrent Marker kits! These markers are a great DIY solution for making windows at home safer for birds.
Here are some reasons why our members were interested in Bird Collision Deterrent Markers:
“I feed birds at my house and want to ensure I create a safe environment for them.”
“I want to help protect birds, because I adore them and I care about the environment.”
“We have birds nesting nearby and want to keep them safe. We’re also hoping that having this starts encouraging other neighbors to look into bird deterrent markers and turning their lights off at night!”
If these sentiments resonate with you, head to the link in our bio to learn more about making your windows bird-friendly.

Eastern Solar Glass is an authorized Feather Friendly dealer/applicator. Their recent Feather Friendly installation at Wachman Hall is a great example of what effective bird-safe design looks like in practice.
@easternsolarglass completed the project using a custom Harmony pattern of our Large-scale Pro markers. The work involved a complex exterior installation carried out at height, with bird protection as the priority throughout.
They have also now implemented their updated dealer pages, including an overview of the bird-glass collision issue and available solutions, along with dedicated pages for Feather Friendly visual markers and Bird Divert Clear UV markers.
Clear, focused pages like these help bring effective bird-safe solutions into more conversations and into real-world projects.
If you’re a Feather Friendly dealer or applicator and haven’t updated your website yet, reach out to us.

There are some projects you work on, and then there are the ones that shift the conversation entirely.
We’ve pulled together a few of those on our website. These are buildings that went from collision hotspots to places that actively protect birds.
You’ll see names like McCormick Place and Royal Bank Plaza, where our Feather Friendly Large-format markers eliminated what was once a serious problem.
And then there’s Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland, where Bird Divert played a key role in making a massive glass façade safer.
These projects started with dead birds, volunteers collecting data, people paying attention, and years of pushing for something better, and eventually chose to do the right thing.
Now, they stand as examples of stewardship that others are scrambling to emulate

With spring migration now at its peak, more birds are arriving at their breeding grounds every day. Sadly, that also means a rise in window collisions.
Our friends and volunteers with bird rescue organizations such as @birdsafephilly, @chicagobirdcollisionmonitors @flapcanada and @safewingsottawaare already finding birds that didn’t survive the impact.
But some do — and when that happens, the actions you take in the first few minutes can make all the difference.
If you find a bird that’s hit a window, here’s what to do:
➡️Ensure that the bird is safe from pedestrians and traffic. If needed, assign someone to stay guard over the bird while you look for an appropriate bag/box to place the bird in.
➡️Gently cover the bird and place it in a paper bag or small cardboard box with air holes and secure the top. Line the bottom with an unscented paper towel or coffee filter.
➡️Keep it in a quiet, dark place, away from noise, pets, and people. This helps reduce stress and minimizes chances of inadvertent escape or further injury. Do not give the bird food or water.
➡️Contact your local wildlife rehabilitation facility as soon as possible. Collision victims often have internal injuries that are not obvious externally, and massive internal damage is likely. Rehabbers are best equipped to determine the extent of injury and provide care.
➡️Better yet, prevent collisions in the first place. Glass that’s been treated with ABC-tested and approved solutions like Feather Friendly® visual markers or Bird Divert™ Clear UV markers helps birds see the danger before it’s too late.
Remember that every treated window saves lives.

The John J. Williamson Education Center at Jenkins Arboretum & Gardens is now a haven for birds.
This wasn't always the case. Staff began recording strikes in spring 2022, and the community pushed for action. A small test phase helped confirm what would work.
Eventually, the goal was to treat far more glass. In winter 2025, the community crowdfunded a Feather Friendly retrofit, covering materials plus installation.
Since treatment, Jenikins has recorded zero strikes on the treated glass! Feather Friendly kits arrive in the garden shop in spring 2026.

Migration is peaking, and we will witness close to 400 million birds flying through tonight!
It is imperative that we take a few simple steps so that our winged friends can reach their breeding grounds safely:
• Treat glass with Feather Friendly visual markers or Bird Divert Clear UV markers
• Keep lights out at night.

From a distance, it doesn’t look like anything has changed.
That’s the point.
Bird Divert Clear UV markers are designed to remain subtle on glass while still being visible to birds. Under UV light, the pattern becomes clear — showing what birds can detect, even when we can’t.
Bird Divert is tested and approved by the American Bird Conservancy, with a minimum 75% reduction in collisions — and even higher performance documented in real-world projects like the Cleveland Cavaliers training facility, where collisions were reduced by 79%.
Clear to you. Proven to protect birds.

May 9 marks World Migratory Bird Day 2026, a day that highlights the fascinating journeys migratory birds undertake each year and the many challenges they face along the way.
This year’s theme, “Every Bird Counts – Your Observations Matter”, focuses on the value of bird observations, citizen science, and the people contributing to bird conservation every day.
Join us in sharing the campaign and continuing the conversation about making the built environment safer for birds during migration and beyond.
Learn more about this year’s campaign here: https://www.worldmigratorybirdday.org/

This year’s World Migratory Bird Day theme, “Every Bird Counts” highlights the importance of citizen science, participating in community science programs and recording your sightings on eBird. Your observations help to support bird conservation science and action! But without creating safe, sustainable environments for birds to thrive we will continue to count less and less.
Most collisions are with windows in individual houses, some from low-rise buildings, and less than one per cent from high rises and skyscrapers. The problem only gets worse for birds that migrate each fall and spring.
Everyone has a role to play in reducing collision risk. Making windows visible to birds is the best solution.Other solutions include mitigating factors that attract birds or put them at higher risk, such as escaped artificial light from windows, and for home owners, placing features that attract birds such as bird feeders a safe distance from the windows.

When Male Birds Just Can’t Wait!
Some birds just have no patience! In many species, males migrate before females in a phenomenon called protandry – arriving early to grab the best breeding territories before the competition gets tough. While not all birds do this, here are a few species that do:
➡️Ruby-throated Hummingbirds – Males speed north weeks before females to claim prime feeding areas and defend them fiercely.
➡️American Redstarts – These stunning warblers arrive early to secure the best breeding territories, using their black-and-orange plumage to impress females.
➡️Black-tailed Godwits – Males arrive early and prepare to put on elaborate aerial displays to attract arriving females.
The downside?
Early birds don’t just get the best territory - they are also the first to be exposed to migration hazards like window collisions.
Adding visual or UV markers to glass helps keep migrants safe!
