Many of our limited editions have explored interesting chapters in the history of American, printing, publishing and design and this one goes deep (and sideways) into just such a story.

The “1943” Edition includes unique Two-Way Memo Books and a special edition of Dashiell Hammett’s The Maltese Falcon, published by Field Notes Brand Books.

Starting in 1943, the American government and publishing industry collaborated on creating what came to be known as the Armed Services Editions. More than 120 million books representing over 1,200 titles were printed and distributed to troops overseas during the Second World War. Until now, that list did not include the Falcon.

The “Lucky” edition honors the penny’s legacy by mimicking copper’s enduring shades of wear: the orangeish-pink “Rosewood,” the well-worn, dirty “Mocha,” and the oxidized green patina of “Mint” Mohawk Mosaic 100-lb cover stocks. Each cover is stamped with metallic copper foil and embossed on the back with the penny’s three distinct obverse designs: stalks of wheat, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Great Seal. The flip-side of each pack’s backing card contains a heartfelt ode to the cent, with a space to enshrine your luckiest penny, whether it’s a shiny example of 2025’s last batch, or one you found, face-up, on the sidewalk decades ago.

Field Notes 70th Quarterly Edition for the Spring celebrates the noble and sadly-doomed American penny.

The U.S. Treasury stopped minting pennies last November so we thought we should give them a proper send-off. The “Lucky Edition” honors the coin’s legacy by mimicking copper’s enduring shades of wear: the orangeish-pink “Rosewood,” the well-worn, dirty “Mocha,” and the oxidized green patina of “Mint” Mohawk Mosaic 100-lb cover stocks.
