Felt really good to get the news of my two nominations for this year’s @hmmawards for Best Short Score- Live Action and Best Song- Short Film. Working late nights with @tiffany___so & @sabasaghafi on their beautifully-crafted, lyrical film, Everything Must Go, brought me right back to our USC days. Somehow we managed to squeeze a song in at the very last minute, sung by @storyslaughter , who absolutely nailed it. Looking forward to sharing this one with you all soon.

Working with @alyshaharan has been one of the great rewards of my career. As with every project I’ve had the pleasure of working on with her, Stone Garden was a labor of love.

For fear of being too long-winded, we produced a making-of-the-score BTS (including sone insights into shooting the film on Disney’s volume stage). I’ll just add that I’m really proud of this score, and immensely grateful to all of the friends and collaborators who were involved. This is the kind of score I dreamed of having the opportunity, the ability even, to write when I was a freshman at Berklee, still mystified by orchestral writing, and barely able to read a grand staff.

So thank you: Alysha, @jackierr @lostlightfilms , my incredible score mixer, who brought the score to life, @zachmcnees , @adammilosmalley for not only introducing me to Alysha, but for being a dear friend and advocate, @gregnicolett.music for the composerly camaraderie, @ginalucianiflute for your playing on the end credits (listen to track 5 to fully experience Gina’s brilliance), @prixmmusicprep for delivering impeccable scores bright and early, all the folks at ILM, the cast and crew (Laurel, Wilder, Karyn, Jon, Oana), @mikeschwarcz for capturing the BTS footage, @thealanchung and @jacksonhl for the video overlays, and of course my wife, @abimsommers , ever my champion, who weighed in on every half-finished demo, and my teachers, who showed me endless patience and grace. Excited to share Solstice with you all!

It was a genuine pleasure to be back at the podium with such world-class musicians, watching in awe as they brought this piece to life in under 12 minutes. It will never cease to amaze me how quickly and virtuosically they’re able to realize a piece of music. I’m eternally grateful to each and every one of them.

Forrest Gray gained recognition for scoring And Everything Is Going Fine, a documentary by Steven Soderbergh about his late father, Spalding Gray. He has since contributed additional music to shows like Dear White People, Bridgerton, The Morning Show, and Secret Invasion. As sole composer, Gray scored Barber (2023), an Irish Neo-noir starring Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones, The Wire), and this past summer composed original music for Alec Baldwin’s adaptation of The Fitzgeralds, a one-act play about the famous novelist and his wife, Zelda.

Thrilled to share the original soundtrack for The Light Won’t Dim, made by my oldest, dearest friend, @jacksonhl . The film explores how solar technology is implemented on the local level, outside the valence of partisan politics and Washington gridlock. It’s a beautifully-made piece with some of the most touching human portraits I’ve seen. Link to the OST and Jackson’s film are in my bio!
