Hiroshi Ishii is the Jerome B. Wiesner Professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT @mitmedialab. In 1995, @ishii_mit founded the Tangible Media Group. He is recognized as a founder of Tangible User Interfaces (TUI).

Ishii expressed this thought within the “In Conversation with Google ATAP” interview series.

One of the 2022 highlights for Google ATAP was the launch of Ripple, an open radar API standard.

We joined forces with experts from across the silicon, sensing, automotive, and electronics industries, including such companies as Blumio, Ford, Infineon, and a number of others to develop open and standardized API interfaces for radar system development.

Ripple can enable hardware and software interoperability, and accelerate the growth of applications for general purpose consumer radar.

Eventually, our team received the "Technology Achievement Award" fromthe Computer Technology Association @CTA for our role in the launch of Ripple.

In 2022, we have had several exciting launches, including the latest edition of Google ATAP Ambient Experiments in collaboration with @koche.

The key question behind this project was: Can garments become connected to their environment?

And the answer turned out to be positive. A team of Google ATAP technologists and engineers made it happen.

As a result, 4 hybrid pieces were created. They were unveiled during a fashion show. Six Soli radars added an interactive dimension to the show and two 12-meter OLED walls demonstrated the interactions between the models and the show space.

Can we create a sensing system that makes devices aware of what’s happening around them?

Earlier this year, Technical and Design Leads at Google ATAP Eiji Hayashi and Lauren Bedal shared how our teams approach this exciting question.

Eiji and Lauren gave a talk at the Augmented World Expo @awe.xr where they introduced a full-body interaction technique that uses miniaturized radar technology and advanced machine learning for the detection and recognition of spatial relations, as they naturally occur around devices.

AWE is the main go-to event for everything related to Spatial Computing including Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Mixed Reality and enabling technologies such as Artificial Intelligence-AI, bio-interfaces, haptics, 5G, streaming.

Ambient Computing technologies can be applicable and influential in a number of industries, including retail.

In summer, @ipoupyrev, Director of Engineering at Google ATAP, presented at the @WWD Metaverse Symposium in Paris. Ivan shared some of the potential applications for mixing physical and virtual interactions in the retail environments that Google ATAP teams have been exploring. Computers are disappearing into the things we use every day, but they are far from feeling “invisible” — they often interrupt us and feel overwhelming.

One of the goals of our design team within Google ATAP is to solve this, and help build devices that understand us intuitively.

Over the past 6 years our team has used a radar-based sensing platform called Soli to create new interaction techniques.
