How does a journey by public transport in Houston compare with one in Berlin? The answer tells us a lot about the different infrastructure in America and Europe.

According to a recent report, the US would need to invest an enormous $4.6tn over the next 20 years to bring its public transit up to “world-class” status, which stands in stark contrast to Europe where most major cities are served by networks that stretch deep into the suburbs.

While there are rural regions in Europe that depend on cars, Americans depend heavily on driving and those unable to do so due to age, disability or the rising costs of car ownership routinely face a laborious gauntlet of patchy public transport options.

“Essentially you are forced to live like a second-class citizen without a car,” said Kari Watkins, a transit expert at the University of California.

To test the limits of the public transport system in Houston, Texas, we sent the Guardian’s environment reporter Oliver Milman on a journey for the same amount of travel time as our European environment correspondent, @ajitniranjan_ , in Berlin.

Houston has just 16 transit vehicles per 100,000 people via its bus and light rail system. Berlin has 122 transit vehicles per 100,000 residents, according to a report by Transportation for America.

Watch to see how the two fared and for the full in-depth report by Oliver Milman follow the link in bio.

How does your city stack up against Houston? Let us know in the comments.

“We are seeing a Trump who’s less concerned about concerns back home, and more concerned about the legacy he leaves on the world stage.”

Donald Trump has launched a new operation, which he called ‘Project Freedom’, to try to open the strait of Hormuz. Could it spark a re-escalation of the war with Iran and bring an end to the ceasefire?

“It didn’t end with the settlement of Lively-Baldoni – in fact, it feels like it might only just have started.”

Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni have settled their legal dispute following the acrimonious production of their 2024 film It Ends With Us, just weeks before a highly anticipated scheduled trial.

“The alleged conflict between the pair began on a film set and has been disastrous for everyone involved. Apart from the lawyers, naturally,” writes Guardian’s columnist Marina Hyde.

“Their insanely costly legal binfire had always been about two creatives graciously shining their combined lights on the issue of domestic violence …”

“The end product – the movie It Ends With Us – is a source of pride to all of us who worked to bring it to life,” ran yesterday’s formal epilogue on the case.

Three and a half years ago, Lively and Baldoni had never even met; now they are part of each other’s CVs for the rest of their (hobbled) careers.

As things stand now, it’s just conceivable that Baldoni might one day make the odd low-budget film, while Lively will be hoping her next project doesn’t tank, although her own husband and at least one movie executive have suggested she might never act again.

“If there is one standout lesson, Lively and Baldoni’s legal trainwreck has taught us this: never go to court. Ever.” To read Hyde’s full opinion piece, follow the link in bio.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, was seen crooning with the Armenian prime minister at a state dinner in Yerevan on Monday night.

The French president was on a state visit to Armenia in an unabashed pre-election pitch on behalf of the country’s prime minister, Nikol Pashinyan, who is seeking re-election next month, saying the country’s destiny lay with Europe.
Macron also accused Russia of abandoning Armenia after the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war that led to Azerbaijan displacing tens of thousands of Armenians.

Pashinyan, who – unlike the leaders of neighbouring Georgia – is increasingly open about his determination to side with Europe, faces a tough challenge at the upcoming elections. Pro-Russia or nationalist parties are trying to end his eight-year rule and accuse him of making too many concessions to Azerbaijan in an effort to win peace.

To read diplomatic editor Patrick Wintour’s report from Yerevan, head to the link in bio.

Note: this video was updated on 05/05/26. A previous version of this post mentioned that Macron was singing La Bohème by Charles Aznavour. However, in this clip he appears to be singing Les Feuilles Mortes by Yves Montand. Other videos on social media showed him singing La Bohème.

“It’s shocking. All I can do right now is express my solidarity with the victims’ families,” the mayor of Leipzig in eastern Germany told German media after a car ploughed into crowds in the city on Monday.

At least two people were killed and several injured after a driver in an SUV drove into an area full of shoppers and cafe patrons. Witnesses said the car appeared to have been stopped by one of the retractable bollards protecting the area.

The mayor, Burkhard Jung, said: “We still don’t really know the motivation.” Authorities confirmed the suspect was a 33-year-old German-born resident of the Leipzig area and had been arrested.

“Everything else will now depend on the work of the police and the investigating authorities,” Jung added.

Despite the uncharacteristically uncontroversial dress code, 'Fashion is Art', a dark cloud hovers over the Met Gala this year — a cloud shaped exactly like billionaire Jeff Bezos. As the main source of funding for the Metropolitan Museum’s new exhibition, Costume Art, the Amazon founder and his wife, Lauren Sánchez Bezos, are now honorary chairs of the Met Gala. But their involvement hasn’t been without controversy. Reporter Matilda Boseley (sans eyebrows) explains.

From a bubbly Eileen Gu to a silver-masked Katy Perry and statuesque Heidi Klum, this year’s Met Gala outfits were some of the most artistic outfits we’ll probably see all year.

This is no coincidence – the theme of this year’s event was “fashion is art”, after all. Although, as it turns out, fashion is also many other things – such as politics.

As well as being highly artistic, it has also been the most controversial Met Gala in years, as it is being funded by its new honorary chairs, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos.

The billionaires’ involvement as the main source of funding for the exhibition and the party has prompted anti-Bezos posters calling for a boycott of the gala placed near the museum and on the subway.

The event also has one notable absence: Zohran Mamdani, who decided to skip the night, breaking a decades-long tradition of New York mayors attending the gala.

“It’s a striking representation of the way rich people co-opt arts, sports and culture - and at the moment, big tech has the money.”

It's the grandest and glitziest event in the fashion calendar, but this year’s Met Gala has sparked backlash thanks to its new honorary chairs, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos.

The billionaire Amazon founder’s involvement has led to boycotts and criticism of the event.

Could this be the most American World Cup ever? With Fifa in charge, ad-solutely.

As well as blessing fans with dynamic pricing for tickets, Fifa is also introducing hydration breaks in the middle of every half.

These breaks aren’t new – they’ve been used many times before in Fifa tournaments when conditions have become too hot. But what is new this time is that they’re mandatory across all games, regardless of the temperature.

As the Guardian’s Barry Glendenning wryly noted in March, “while this diktat … was obviously based on nothing other than player welfare, some cynics observed that these three-minute breaks would ostensibly turn football into a game of four quarters. As luck would have it, they would also present Fifa with an additional 208 guaranteed advertising slots from which to hoover up even more revenue.”

Three people died and three others reported ill after a suspected hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean, the World Health Organization and South Africa’s health department said on Sunday.

The outbreak of the rare infection was reported on the MV Hondius, which was travelling between Argentina and Cape Verde. According to several online ship-tracking sites, the vessel was just off the port of Praia, the capital of Cape Verde, on Sunday night.

The WHO said an investigation was under way but that at least one case of hantavirus had been confirmed. One of the patients was in intensive care in a South African hospital, the UN’s health agency told the Associated Press, and the WHO was working with authorities to evacuate two others with symptoms from the ship.

Two of those who died were a husband and wife aged 70 and 69 from the Netherlands.

The South African health ministry said the man fell ill onboard the ship and died on the island of Saint Helena, while his wife died at a hospital in Kempton Park, a city in South Africa.

A British man, 69, who became ill on the ship was taken to a private health facility in Johannesburg, according to the South African health ministry, which said he tested positive for hantavirus.

How many thoughts do you think we have every day?

Whether they are big, small, urgent or banal, the answer is believed to be around 50,000. And those are just the ones that register. Subconsciously, we’re constantly sifting through a barrage of stimuli: background noise, clutter on our desks, the mere presence of our phones.

It’s no wonder you feel distracted. Formidable though they may be, our brains’ processing powers are a poor match for the fast-paced modern world, the constant pings of our devices and sources of distraction. Many of us routinely feel overwhelmed, and struggle to focus on what we need to get done.

But a new book, co-written by Dutch expert Oscar de Bos suggests doing so may be easier than we think. He argues that we can better harness our attention by better understanding our brains, and learning how to manage common “leaks” of our concentration.

Nobody knows for sure how much cocaine is getting into Antwerp but it’s one of Europe’s main entry points – and experts warn smugglers could be changing tactics.

Last year, customs officers in the Belgium port city handled the equivalent of 13.6m 6-metre-long containers of goods being imported.

Along with routine attempts to evade duties or import counterfeit goods, officers are also grappling with relentless efforts by violent criminals to smuggle drugs into Europe, especially cocaine.

Authorities seized 483 tonnes of the drug between January 2019 and June 2024, the largest amount among 17 ports reporting to the European Union Drugs Agency. While cocaine seizures at Antwerp fell to 55 tonnes in 2025, from a record-breaking 121 tonnes in 2023, the problem remains formidable.

Cocaine production in South America, above all Colombia, has skyrocketed over the past decade. Dutch drug gangs that had been prioritising the even larger Rotterdam port shifted their attention to Belgium.

From changing routes to trying to avoid major ports altogether by dropping illegal cargo at sea, drug traffickers’ modus operandi is altering in various ways.

Watch our video to find how the authorities are tackling drug smuggling in Antwerp, and for the full in-depth report by Jennifer Rankin follow the link in bio.
