Happy to finally share my article on the limits of fair use doctrine for certain forms of African artworks! This essay is the product of my longstanding research on museums and the art market, and more recent conversations with two volunteer attorneys I met through my job at @vla_newyork Thank you to @alessandraraengo, the peer reviewers, and the editors at @liquidblackness for supporting my work! In 1929, curator Andry-Farcy accepted a donation of the two masks at the front of this case from dealer Paul Guillaume making the Grenoble Museum the first public French institution to recognize African objects as art. The museum staff are currently undertaking provenance research on these objects and engaging heritage bearers to determine if and how the museum should keep them in its collections. Thank you to organizers Fabrice Flahutez, Alice Ensabella and Anne Foucault (image 2) for including me in « Le collectionnisme dada et surréalisme des arts extra-occidentaux « colloquy! I’m looking forward to continuing these generative conversations!

I just landed in Venice and I’m looking forward to this conference at the end of the week! I will share my analysis of Tristan Tzara’s collection of African art, the first comprehensive assessment since its dispersal following his death in 1963. Comparing Tzara’s collection to that assembled by Alain Locke for the unrealized Harlem Museum of African Art, I will demonstrate how Tzara was an anomaly, combining genres of artwork favored by intellectuals along the color line. French friends, I hope to see you there!

@sgibbles11 and I are delighted to share the call for papers for our panel, “Subversive Bodies: Womyn Performing Blackness in the Caribbean and Caribbean Diaspora,” at the 2025 College Art Association Annual Conference @caavisual !
•
Inspired by the work of contemporary artists like Firelei Báez and historians of early modernity like Cécile Fromont, we are soliciting studies focused on the tensions between the performance of political and artistic radicalism of women of African descent living and/or working in the small yet significant geographic region of the Americas called the Antilles from any time period.
•
The full CFP can be found at the link in my bio; abstracts are due in one month on 8/29. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to either of us with questions, and we hope to read your submissions soon!
•

Today I participated in @michaeljfoxorg Summer Challenge to raise critical funds for Parkinson’s research. I cycled 🚴🏽♀️10K here in my neighborhood in Queens in memory of my paternal grandfather, George E. Whitham. Thanks to support from family and friends, I’ve already raised $1,000 💸 which translates to $4,000 💰 thanks to a historic 3:1 match by one of MJFF’s generous supporters. The campaign @teamfoxmjff 🦊 continues until the end of August, and I’d like to raise another $250 between now and then, which would bring my fundraising total to $5K. If you’ve already donated, thank you so much! 🙏🏽 If you would like to contribute, there’s a link in my bio. Swipe right ➡️ for a throw back photo of me, Grandpa Whit, and my father. Here’s love! 💕

Two years ago this month, our friends helped us relocate from our beloved Philadelphia to Queens so Steven could take the next step in his career as best boy grip on the biggest TV show since Westworld. #Fallout was released on April 17th and we’ve been watching it together slowly, savoring every shot. He met every challenge with his usual tenacity and creativity, and I’m so proud of him. This city isn’t always nice, but as the old heads say, if you can make it here you can make it anywhere.

CAA 2024 kicks off next week, and I’m thrilled to be sharing my research on the 1941 agreement between the PMA and the Penn Museum determining their respective priorities for collecting African material cultures. The institutions’ stereotypical division between art and artifact gets more complicated when placed in context of the Great Migration and the rise of the Black middle class - evidenced in the Penn Museum’s marketing of plaster cast replicas of objects like this mboko in the inaugural 1945 issue of Ebony.
•
Link in bio for more details about the other wonderful presentations in “The Black Commonwealth” panel! I’m grateful to conveners Janell B. Pryor and julia elizabeth neal for their interest in my work, and to CAA for two grants to support my participation in the conference. Can’t wait to see so many friends and colleagues at our art nerd Super Bowl!

My focus for 2024 is gratitude, so I’m starting the year with my beloved pup, Thomas. Today we celebrated his 13th birthday and 10th gotchya day! He’s been with me on every step of my journey to becoming a professional art historian (pictured here in Rittenhouse Square the summer I started my doctoral program at the University of Pennsylvania, before we both started going grey), and his unconditional love and loyalty inspire me to be a better human every day.

Closing out 2023 with the official launch of Philly Necrofutures! Dr. Smith and I published a research note on our project in the Autumn issue of Panorama (link in bio). I am so grateful to the many supporters of our project, especially Jenny Thompson at PMA, my colleagues Tim McCall and Elizabeth Kolsky at Villanova’s History Department, and the Sachs Fund.

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
