During reading time, I sometimes pat the kids’ backs when they’re having a hard moment. They’ll ask, “Back pat PLEASE!” — and it’s become one of our little rituals of care.
Today I walked away to help another student, and when I looked back, two kids were gently patting each other’s backs. 💛
Sometimes kids learn from watching how we care for each other.
Empathy isn’t taught through lectures, it’s modeled in small, tender moments like this.
Our job isn’t just to keep them safe, it’s to build a community where they know how to make each other feel safe too.
