Arcachon, 12 Avenue du Général de Gaulle. Who doesn’t remember the scene from “This Is Spinal Tap” where the band planned a monumental Stonehenge for the stage, but due to a mix-up with the units of measurement, only a tiny model ended up floating from the ceiling? To this day, it remains the perfect metaphor for projects where nobody asks any questions.

Wer erinnert sich nicht an die Episode aus „This Is Spinal Tap“, als die Band ein monumentales Stonehenge für die Bühne plante und wegen eines Fehlers bei den Maßeinheiten nur ein winziges Modell von der Decke schwebte. Bis heute die Metapher für Projekte, bei denen niemand nachfragt.

Qui ne se souvient pas de cet épisode de « Spinal Tap » où le groupe avait prévu d’ériger un Stonehenge monumental sur scène, mais où, à cause d’une erreur d’unité de mesure, seule une minuscule maquette flottait au plafond ? C’est encore aujourd’hui la métaphore par excellence des projets pour lesquels personne ne pose de questions.

This French school holiday calendar—which at first glance seems completely unremarkable—has been with me since 1991. It sat in my glove compartment for 20 years and, most recently, in my passport. The card shows the numbers of the départements, which until 2009 made up the last two digits of the car license plate; today, they appear in white on a special blue field.
Dieser – auf den ersten Blick völlig unscheinbare französische Schulferienkalender – begleitet mich seit 1991. Er lag 20 Jahre im Handschuhfach und zuletzt in meinem Reisepass. Die Karte zeigt die Nummern der Départements, die bis 2009 die letzten beiden Ziffern des Kfz-Kennzeichens bildeten; heute findet man sie in Weiß auf einem blauen Sonderfeld rechts unten.
Ce calendrier des vacances scolaires françaises, qui semble à première vue tout à fait banal, m’accompagne depuis 1991. Il a passé 20 ans dans la boîte à gants de ma voiture, puis, plus récemment, dans mon passeport. La carte indique les numéros des départements qui, jusqu’en 2009, constituaient les deux derniers chiffres de la plaque d’immatriculation ; aujourd’hui, ces deux chiffres sont inscrits en blanc dans un encadré bleu en bas à droite.

Yesterday morning: Walk from Arcachon Ville d’Hiver through the woods to the spectacular shifting sand dune, Dune du Pilat. It is up to 120 m high, 500 m wide, and about 3 km long, and located at the mouth of the Bassin d’Arcachon. A nature reserve since 1978, it is the second-most visited natural monument in France, attracting over 1 mio visitors/y.

Hier matin : randonnée à pied depuis Arcachon Ville d’Hiver à travers les forêts jusqu’à la spectaculaire Dune du Pilat. Haute de 120 mètres, large de 500 mètres et longue d’environ 3 kilomètres, elle se trouve à l’embouchure du bassin d’Arcachon. Classée réserve naturelle depuis 1978, c’est le deuxième site naturel le plus visité de France, avec plus d’un million de visiteurs.

Yesterday, 8:45 p.m. We sneak past a row of houses that line the coast and have private access to the sandy beach. The ravages of time have taken their toll on some of their staircases.

From our family archive: a historical carnival poster from the Camberg Men’s Choir, dated February 1912.
It was printed by the Lauter printing company, which also produced the Camberg Bürgerzeitung newspaper. As small printing companies in the 20th century only printed in monochrome, coloured paper or pre-printed forms were used, also known as Schmuckplakat — local information, such as the name of an event, its theme, the location and the time, was then printed in black in the reserved spaces.

Judging an album by its cover usually works well.

That’s how I became aware of @TheJacksons’ debut album … today in my calendar ‘The Art of Soul Covers 2026’.
After six years with Motown, Joe Jackson, the father and manager of the Jackson 5, pulled the plug and moved to Epic in Philadelphia. The new contract included higher royalties and the opportunity for the five brothers to contribute at least two of their own songs to each album. Motown, of course, wasn’t happy. They sued the Jackson 5 for breach of contract and took the name “Jackson 5”. The group had to be renamed “The Jacksons”. Jermaine Jackson was unable to join them because he was married to Motown boss Berry Gordy’s daughter, Hazel Gordy. His younger brother Randy replaced him.
1976 was a year of musical upheaval. The disco wave was imminent. The Bee Gees’ “Boogie Child”, Silver Convention‘s “Get Up and Boogie” and Wild Cherry‘s “Play That Funky Music” set the tone. I completely overlooked the Jacksons’ self-titled album. So it‘s all the more wonderful to rediscover this historic record today.
