In 1637 at St Giles Cathedral, in response to the minister beginning to read from the Anglican Book of Common Prayer (imposed on the Protestant Scots by Charles I fae doon the road), Edinburgh local Jenny Geddes stood up and threw her stool at the head of the offending minister. A riot ensued that barrelled into the Wars of the Covenant & Three Kingdoms, The English Civil War & ultimately Charlie getting his head lopped off.
Many a moon later, so taken by her gallus act (‘Gallus’, Scots for Bold/Self confident), Burns named his horse Jenny Geddes.
So hae a few drams, swirl the words of the heaven taught ploughman about yer gob, and be wary of lassies on stools. ❤️🏴
