I spotted Zach through the front windows of @bubandgrandmasbread and immediately walked in and asked if he’d be willing to come to my studio to pose for a portrait. He looks so much like Hemingway, I had to get him in to recreate an icon portrait of Ernest by Yousuf Karsh. Zach was onboard and ordered a sweater the next day.
We spent about an hour at the studio, dialing in the lighting setup to replicate the photo as closely as we could. Such a fun exercise in acting on an impulse, following through and shooting with a really clear intention. Usually I experiment a lot during shoots, but we had one objective and we just focused on that.

Nabilah was introduced to me through a mutual friend, who happens to be Australian, that detail isn’t important to the story but i think it’s important to note the generosity, kindness and high energy levels of most Aussies cause when my friend @willcolenso called to say “I may have a shoot for you with vogue Australia, for a brilliant artists I know” his voice was cracking more than mine. I appreciated his excitement for me and love that he thought of me for this.
We shot at Nabilah’s studio, beautifully filled with light, surrounded by towering windows and her art. The sculptures come from drawings/ doodles first, and then get welded by hand, all of which she demonstrated for me, step by step. It was an amazing opportunity to get to see an artist like her work, in her own space.

I’ve been making trips to the fabric district downtown LA before shoots to look for interesting backdrops. I’m always looking for something specific, but never find it, instead I usually end up leaving with something I have no idea if I’ll like or not but it’s always worth the experiment. And sometimes I get lucky and end up with a floral stitched fabric.
