With the new year approaching, I’ve been reflecting on this past year and the work that’s shaped it. I’m making a point to share more of the projects and stories I’ve been part of, even though self-promotion has never been my strong suit. This project was close to home in many ways. As a granddaughter and daughter to a family with the genetic eye disease Retinitis Pigmentosa, I was deeply moved by Danelle Umstead’s story. Witnessing how this diagnosis altered the lives of my Father, Grandmother and Aunt, and living with the ever present possibility of it touching my own life. This disease has played a fundamental role in how I move through the world. Danelle represents more than just an incredibly resilient athlete in the sports world but a clear example of the strength and courage that exists in humanity. Through her foundation, Sisters in Sports, Danelle has created a community for strong and capable women of all backgrounds with varying disabilities to come together and celebrate life together.

This was a special story to share with an all female crew. A project that reminded me how powerful storytelling can be- not just because of the finished product, but the energy that can be created when passionate humans come together to honor the good work of others.

This has been a true labor of love. Documenting over the course of the past few years the tender and honest moments shared between Mary and her granddaughter, my dearest friend, Raina.

Mary has dedicated her life to protecting the rights of others and sacrificed much for her beliefs. At 86, she lives in a treehouse filled to the brim with over 800 binders of collected research, news clippings and historical artifacts on every current event she has lived through.

I feel honored and grateful to share a glimpse into Mary's story.
