I was finally able to visit an incredible tree after reading about it many years ago. The Birthing Tree is an ancient White Oak that used to be a stopping point on the Old Kentucky Trail from various points East heading West. It was already a large tree when wagon trains were passing through. As it was a well known landmark and meeting place, many children are believed to have been born underneath its branches, giving its name. With a circumference of nearly 25 feet, a height of 80, and a spread of 125+ the tree easily predates all white settlement of the area. An age well over 300 years is very likely. True living natural history, absolutely incredible to see.

Earlier this month I finally was able to visit a legendary tree just a few miles inside the Indiana state line from Ohio. This Bur Oak and 2 others nearby are believed to have been left to demarcate the Native American lands from The Ohio Territory as a result of the Treaty of Greenville in 1795. While the modern state line is now about 5 miles East it still stands as a witness to what once was. Sadly the tree is in decline from lightning, herbicide drift and old age, but is still living. Over 300 years of age with a circumference of 253", height of ~60', and a spread of ~80'
