PARTY FAVOUR is back! For our second edition, we are delighted to present Steve McQueen’s gorgeous LOVERS ROCK, the second part of the director’s SMALL AXE — an audacious five-part film series about the lives of London’s West Indian community between the sixties and eighties.

LOVERS ROCK follows the unfolding romance of a couple that meet at a blues party in West London in the seventies. Like the very best party movies, commentaries on classism, racism and sexual politics spark up in the electrical current that courses through the film, and charges its party scene. LOVERS ROCK’s use of music is extraordinary: setting the film’s narrative arc, igniting its frisson, and showcasing its ability to move a collective. Without giving too much away, the Silly Games scene is breathtaking. We’re so excited to present this one!

We’re moving inside this time, and will be hosted at the Expo Outlet on Nov 14. Doors are at 7:30PM, screening at 8 PM! Our event will be presented by resident programmers Brandon Kaufman and Chelsea Rozansky. Party to follow, with special guest CHINELO DJing. Drinks and concessions will be available for purchase. Our last screening sold out! Get your tickets early - you don’t want to miss this one!

Lucent is thrilled to present the inaugural edition of PARTY FAVOUR, a monthly film series about the agonies and ecstasies of partying.

For our first program, we’re pairing Claire Denis’ U.S. GO HOME with Chantal Akerman’s PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG GIRL AT THE END OF THE SIXTIES IN BRUSSELS — both made for the French broadcaster Arte’s 1994 series ALL THE BOYS AND GIRLS OF THEIR TIME, which commissioned directors to make a film soundtracked by the music they grew up with.

These are two masterpieces of the party film genre: poignant explorations of desire and identity, whip smart reflections on history and memory. 

The films will be introduced by hosts Brandon Kaufman and Chelsea Rozansky at our outdoor rooftop location. Screenings begin at 9PM! Bring your own picnic blanket or lawn chair for seating. Drinks and concessions will be available for purchase. Stick around for a party after the program!

Next Thursday, we’re doing a special screening of Vibrations - the 1996 fever dream of a film about a guy who loses his hand (literally) and becomes an electronic music sensation! Vibrations has a little something for everyone - Twin Peaks fans, those who crush on Christina Applegate, electronic music enthusiasts, and anyone who likes fun. Hosted at Expo - showtime 8pm, we’ll have beverages and snacks available for purchase, and feel free to stay around and hang out after the movie. Tickets linked in bio!
