Very happy to embark on a new learning journey that has absolutely nothing to do with my professional background and everything to do with what I’ve always loved the most — dogs!

I’ve started studying Canine Osteopathy (犬類整骨療法) with the London College of Animal Osteopathy 🇬🇧 and it will probably go on for 1.5-2 years depending on my progress. Most of the study is done online so I’m not going anywhere. No, I did not quit my full-time job. This is part-time. And yes, you can make time for it. And no, it’s not 辛苦. And yes, I plan to complete this in 2 years. I’ll add to the FAQ as more DMs roll in.

I’m just getting started and still going through foundational knowledge, but eventually when I get into the clinical phases, Perry and Baloo will naturally be my best practice buddies and it will be especially good for Perry, who will need extra care for his spine as he gets older.

All of this will culminate in a research paper as well as 10 client (dog) assessments and video submissions (if I pass everything) before I can officially become a certified canine osteopath, and it will be an internationally recognized qualification that can get me placed in a veterinary clinic, as well as a discipline that I will very much like to eventually offer to owners of senior or injured dogs, also as volunteer for a dog rescue organization like @hkdr_official. It’s also something I would consider to do when I eventually retire from full-time work. Yes, I have no plans to deal with people after that point, honestly 🚬

For now, I’m just enjoying the process and absorbing new knowledge as best as I can, knowing that it can be put to use to help furries friends that I will come to meet on this journey. It’s looking to be very fun, pretty challenging, and just what I need at this stage in life. I think my future self is going to thank me for this too. Maya would be so proud of me.

I doubt anyone has seen these super super old photos… meet my first dog Chubby, a Pekingese that my parents bought for me when I was 15 and grew up with me. Chubby was never the cuddly type, and I had little concept at the time on how to take care of a dog, so we were an experimental pair and made a ton of mistakes together, but I am glad I had him in my life through all sorts of growing experiences because I didn’t have any close friends who could do that with.

He passed just before my college sophomore year ended while I was still in Boston, so I never had the chance to say a proper goodbye the whole time his health declined with cancer. Bailey came into my life years later in my mid twenties.

She’s blending in very well with Perry and Baloo, and definitely proving that the (very brave) idea to let Baloo pick his own sister from @hkdr_official was one of the best that ever struck me. Honestly, I have not seen Baloo play with another dog like this for the 1.5 years I’ve had him. I’m also convinced that Maya’s invisible hand/paw guided my decision and she continues to watch over her human and doggy family members.

Needless to say I’m very proud to be a three-time adopter supporting my most favorite charity and animal organization in Hong Kong, and do not think at all that this will be my last adoption in this life.

Riley has already been on a bunch of car rides, vet check ups, park visits, play dates, and mall walkarounds, and apart from her pouncing on me full force every morning the second she sees I’m awake, I really have nothing to complain about. Life is happier, funnier, cuter, and a lot cuddlier with her around, and we are very grateful to have her in the family forever.

She has just had her second round of vaccination shots and there doesn’t seem to be any apparent need for any medication or further check ups. She just comes off to me as a happy dog with no issues (partially thanks to her mixed breed that’s supposedly weeds out any weak genetic health traits) and will live for a very long time. Again, mixed breed is the best breed and it is what makes her so unique.

For anyone who is still attached to the idea of buying a pedigree just so you know what it is, let me tell you: ask yourself if you actually need labels and validation, and if it precedes your love for dogs.
