A small window into the BTS (behind the scenes) fabrication of set elements.Sometimes our work is so secret you barely know we exist….. 🤫🤐
Happily creating custom windows and a giant set @stoodilydoodleyo for a very special client and project.
Excited to share with you once it is released and public to the world!
My revised, solid plaster stand is finally complete and ready to ship off to @artofplay.
After 7 days of plaster curing and an additional 5 days for the acrylic top coat - Span 12 has a very SOLID stand for display.
This custom stand allows the kinetic sculpture to be both plumb and level. So the surface of air bubble will match the surface of the stand, allowing the bubble to rise from the surface.
I opted to use plaster of Paris - a version of Gypsum (Calcium Sulfate Dihydrate). It is a natural occurring mineral named after the Paris Basin in France where massive deposits of gypsum were mined and processed into plaster.
This plinth was more difficult to fabricate than simply 3D printing a stand…. However, as an old man I appreciate analogue techniques.
Another added benefit - there are no plastics or polyesters in this plinth as there would be if using a 3D printed piece 🌏

Pro tip when painting white on white…. use a flashlight to help see and smooth out your brushstrokes.
After a week of curing the plaster, this is the 5th and final coat on this revised plinth.Alllmost ready to ship to NYC.

Who needs a 3D printer when you can work with Plaster of Paris!?!?!!
Test plinth success!
Although I think that only one layer of silicone is needed for the paint layer offset.

Just a handful of the presentations I attended today while exhibiting at the Gathering for Gardner recreational mathematics convention.
Celebrating art, science, physics, puzzels and mathematics… this convention has literally blown my mind 🧨🧠🤯
Span 11
Time Lapse: 2 hours at 18 degrees Celsius
Made as a backup for Span 4 (shown in background). I discovered this sculpture could nest inside a plinth and stand upright.I felt it deserved its own spotlight / time in the sun.
I will be presenting this sculpture at the Physics and Math convention ‘Gathering for Gardner’ Feb 17-22 in San Francisco.
I hope to see you there.Otherwise, stay tuned for more updates.
I hope this series has allowed you to reflect and regain command of your own attention spans.Along with critical thought, we need control over our own attention more than ever in this time of conflict.

Span 1 has been gifted to the original source of inspiration, @physicsfun.After 7 years of searching I finally tracked down the Banksy of physics.
Here is Span 1 next to the original kinetic artpiece that we still have no origin / provenance for.Anyone is welcome to join the search. Please let me know if anyone has an idea who the original creator is.
Stay tuned for my interview with @physicsfun to hear more of the story.

Artist Statement:
Six years ago a friend & collaborator forwarded me a post from the instagram site @physicsfun. It displayed a curious object that appears to be a kinetic sculpture. I was asked to recreate the piece for use in commercial photography. I immediately began a deep dive into studying different thixotropic fluids in order to recreate it. Four years later I had a prototype.
After experimenting with the prototype I realized I no longer had the attention span to fully witness the entire cycle of the very thing I had created. The piece took approximately two hours to complete and yet I could not focus long enough to watch the entire sequence.
I spent increasing periods thinking about how I spend my own time. Specifically
thinking about how I spend my time using social media applications. We scroll through around 300 feet of posts every day and are exposed to hundreds of advertisements. Each ad or post capturing a bit of our time and attention.
A further two years later after creating the prototype I am finally able to release 10 kinetic sculptures into the world. This would not have been possible without the help of Public Glass Studios and Van Tetterode Glass Studio.
I am curious to see their effect on people. Will the sculptures cause the viewer to self reflect on how they prioritize their own time? Do they question the limitations of their own attention
span and need for attention? Just like I do.
What is your attention span? What is it worth? How has my own attention span changed? How do I feel being a part of this evolutionary shift by posting content? Has work + life + app culture forever changed our ability to focus? Has our existence been reduced to simply
scrolling for dopamine release?

The Attention Economy -
Time is the one commodity that we all share equally. No one person on this planet is richer or poorer of time. Collectively as a species time is our greatest equalizer. However, our time is finite since our lives are not eternal.
I spent increasingly amounts of time thinking about how I spend my own time. Specifically thinking about how I spend my time using social media apps. We scroll through around 300 feet of posts every day and are exposed to hundreds of advertisements. Each ad or post capturing a bit of our time and attention. Including this post you are reading now.

Problematic Social Media Use, or PSMU, has yet to be listed by the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) or the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Researchers are having difficulty studying the effects of social media use as it is evolving so quickly.
There is no doubt its impact on human behavior specifically among adolescent females.Researchers debate whether PSMU should be considered a separate clinical condition or a manifestation of underlying psychiatric disorders.
Approximately 5.2 billion people or around 64% of the global population use social media as of the date of this posting.I question how many of us have control over our social media use and whether there has ever been a behavioral disorder so pervasive yet universally acceptable across all global cultures.
This is the second piece in the series exploring our attention span and how it has evolved recently with the advent of smartphones and social media. What you are viewing is a time lapse recording.Would you have the attention span to view it in real time?
The videos shown are a combination of real and timelapse footage.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is released by your hypothalamus in your brain and acts as a hormone. One dopamine’s many roles is involved with pleasure and motivation.Large amounts of Dopamine are released when experiencing pleasure. Our brains developed this evolutionary response for survival.Eating, drinking, sleeping, & sexual activity all produce high amounts of dopamine as they help our species thrive and reproduce.
Scrolling social media activates the brain’s reward center by releasing dopamine.Every like, comment or re-post is a small reward. These rewards are unpredictable and variable which is for a reason. The algorithms associated with social media tap into our addictive nature for more dopamine. The more unpredictable the outcome the longer we stay active on each platform. This concept of locked attention vs. unexpected rewards is analogous to a slot machine.
This is the third piece in the series exploring our attention span and how it has evolved recently with the advent of smartphones and social media. What everyone should know is that even if the gambler wins the casino comes out on top.
The videos shown are a combination of real and timelapse footage.
