I’m feeling deeply frustrated with how victims of crime are being treated.
Too many of A Quarter Blue’s children and teens are revictimized by the very systems that are supposed to protect them. We see it when children are forced into reunification with their perpetrators, when child sexual abuse cases are dismissed, and when the California Victim Compensation Board denies funding for mental health services after crimes have already been reported.
These programs are meant to support survivors through designated funds. Yet time and time again, we find ourselves fighting just to get therapy reimbursed for the youth we serve.
At A Quarter Blue, we are frequently not reimbursed for our clients’ therapy due to bureaucratic barriers — a missing police report, destroyed records, or technicalities that place the burden back on the victim. Meanwhile, these young people are simply trying to wake up in the morning, go to school, keep a job, and survive the weight of their trauma.
If we truly want to prevent outcomes like homelessness, addiction, and long-term mental health crises, we must become victim-centered. Trauma left untreated doesn’t disappear — it grows.
And this is where our community can step in.
Right now, we have the opportunity to say: “I’m sorry the system failed you, but we will not.”
We are seeking support to cover $200 per month for a teenage girl’s therapy. The official records of the sexual abuse committed against her have been destroyed, but the effects of that trauma are still very real and heavy on her heart and CalVCB REFUSES to pay.
This could be one donor giving $200 a month, four donors giving $50, or eight giving $25 a month to ensure she can continue receiving the care she needs.
