The series was called ‘(No) Vacancy’.

I’d started travelling for work in 2021 after years of romanticising the notion of it. But travel in times of Covid meant being a long way away from any concept of home.

Things came to a head in 2022 when I was working in Tasmania on a TV show filming down there for 4 months. A culmination of exhaustion, high-stress and grief sent me into a negative spin that I’ve done my best to work myself out of since.

The perfunctory space of a motel room is great for a short time, but months in those cramped space will chip away at you and make you long for home comforts.

It made something worth photographing though.

Here are the five images I submitted to @capture.mag under Doco category and made it into the top 30 list. 4 of the 5 were taken on ‘essential exercise’ walks during lockdown in April and May last year. The other (first image) was taken in Mudgee. I look for things that aren’t aesthetically amazing and see what I can do with the composition.

So last year I got booked to do a daily on Apex, shot by @lawrencesherdp in and around Sydney, Blue Mountains and Canberra.

It’s official…ly over

After finding out in April this year that I got into the Head On photo festival’s Open Program, after contacting gallery after gallery only to be told they were booked, it was my love of Ramen that lead me to contact Gallery Lane Cove after spotting the gallery while waiting to cross at an intersection in Lane Cove.

Finally, after years and years of wanting to do a solo photography exhibition, I had a body of work and a gallery.

It’s been a process but also a stepping stone into what to do next. The subject of the show came out of a moment of isolation, both personal and government mandated.

My 6th time (I should go elsewhere)

The rain was a drizzle, Shinsaibashi was a buzz with a Saturday night crowd.

Reflecting on isolation, burnout and the quiet intimacy of transient spaces, “Vacancy”, a photo-documentary project by photographer and filmmaker Matthew Bedford explores vacated motels and hotels that bear traces of a solitary traveller far from home.
