As AI becomes part of everyday life, questions about trust and accountability matter more than ever. Could open-source AI help people better understand the systems shaping their world?
Raffi Krikorian sat down with Atlantic CEO Nicholas Thompson to talk about open-source AI, transparency, safety, and the risks of concentrating too much power in too few hands.

What do refineries, landfills and cows have in common?
Well, they all create TONNES (literally) of invisble methane gas, which is exponentially more potent than carbon dioxde, having a major impact on climate warming.
Jaicy and the EyeClimate are part of Mozilla Foundation’s first Incubator project, aiming to make the invisible visible by detecting undetected methane emissions across the globe. eyeclimate
MethaneMapper is an open-source tool that gives communities the power to spot hazardous gas leaks from space and demand accountability.
We’re proud to supporting four pioneering projects that are building the pathways that will put game-changing information directly into the hands of the people who need it most. Learn more about Mozilla Foundation’s Incubator program link in bio ⚡
Last month Meta quietly shared that they plan to stop supporting end-to-end encryption on Instagram messages, prompting a lot of questions from across our community 👀 so after collecting more than 20k petition signatures and your biggest FAQs Meta agreed to meet with us. Here’s everything you need to know👇👇👇
1. Meta confirmed that they plan to move forward with their decision to remove encrypted messaging from IG DMs as planned. Their reasoning: not enough people used it🫠
2. People who want encryption are being pointed to WhatsApp
3. Chats that are currently encrypted won’t be decrypted, and they will disappear after May 8. Save them now using Meta’s download tool before the deadline
4. 1:1 chats on both Whatsapp and Messenger platforms remain encrypted. BUT: any Messenger group chat (even just 3 people!!) is NOT encrypted
5. Meta confirmed they are not using DMs for ad targeting or AI training. Exception: the moment you interact with Meta AI inside a chat, that conversation is fair game.
So, what now??
We recommend using platforms like Signal or Threema where encryption is on by default.
Instagram DMs were never the gold standard for privacy, but now even that limited protection is gone. Treat every DM on Instagram like it could be public, and move the conversations that matter somewhere safer.
Sign out petition in bio to keep the conversation going and show Meta encryption should always be default ⚡️⚡️

What happens when we stop building technology on corporate terms, and start letting communities shape it instead?
This year, Mozilla Festival’s theme is Wilding🌿 🍃 inspired by the ecological practice of rewilding, an invitation to return to the edges of what technology can be, to claim the systems we build and the infrastructures they depend on.
Early Bird badges are now up for grabs ⚡ get your ticket, add it to your cal and let's build the foundation for our collective tech future 🌞

Instagram has just announced it’s going to drop its encrypted messaging feature on May 8
This is coming after they once told us that “end-to-end encrypted messages and calls ensure only you and the people you’re communicating with can see or listen to what is sent, and no one else, not even Meta, can do so.”
Well, they’re getting rid of that. So it’s time to take these three steps 👇
Get yourself a proper encrypted messaging service like Signal or Threema
Download and delete your encrypted chats from Instagram
Sign Mozilla Foundation’s petition to tell Meta that encryption matters—and you stand for privacy
FWIW...if you use more than one digital product, you've got a tech stack.
Mozilla Data Collective CEO EM Lewis-Jong recently sat down with Dr. Sam Illingworth from Slow AI and discussed the importance of transparency and control when building your online experience.
So looking at your own stack, are you mostly renting or mostly buying?
And if you're building better tech, check out a plethora of open datasets over at Mozilla Data Collective⚡ link in bio

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
Keep track of Instagram updates discreetly while protecting your privacy and staying anonymous.
View profiles and photos anonymously with ease using the Private Profile Viewer.
This free tool allows you to view Instagram Stories anonymously, ensuring your activity remains hidden from the story uploader.
Anonstories lets users view Instagram stories without alerting the creator.
