Biggest Challenge – Tsvetelina Alexiadis, Data Team Lead, Perceiving Systems Department

We and the Max-Planck Institute for Solid State Research had a full-house townhall meeting today with Patrick Cramer, President of the Max Planck Society @maxplanckgesellschaft We discussed many topics: from inhouse topics concerning our institutes to global issues such as the challenges scientists face in some countries, and how Europe needs to find its place in the world.

President Cramer: „Our value is excellence. Are we asking the big human questions? Are we aiming for breakthrough innovations? Are we willing to share our data so others can build on our findings and propel science forward every day? Yes we are.“ In a time when science is increasingly shaped by competition between the US and China, Europe must define its own path: one built on scientific excellence, openness, responsibility, and long-term thinking.

Patrick Cramer also reminded us that there are a lot of positive news — we are often simply too distracted by the negative. The important thing is to focus on what we can change, to stay active, and to conduct research for the future.

The MPG is doing its share:
• In the last three years, the MPG recruited 40 new directors and 15 group leaders
• it established a new PostDoc program
• it launched the Max Planck AI Network https://ai.mpg.de/
• and it continued to commercialize ideas and help start-ups get off the ground — such as Meshcapade (https://www.linkedin.com/company/5209291/admin/page-posts/published/?share=true#), one of our spin-offs.

Speaking of start-ups: The Max Planck Society ranks among the top German research organizations when it comes to spin-offs: not just in numbers, but also in value. Europe does not need to copy Silicon Valley or China. It needs the confidence to build on its own strengths: scientific rigor, international collaboration, curiosity-driven research, and the courage to invest in breakthroughs that positively shape our future. #MaxPlanck #Ai #Ki #Robotics
