🍫For the very first time at MUNCH, experience the works Edvard Munch created for Norway’s iconic chocolate brand, Freia. Commissioned in 1922 for the factory’s women’s canteen, these paintings form the starting point for an exhibition exploring Munch’s vision for art in public space and the wider social context surrounding the project.⁠

Now temporarily relocated from Freia’s headquarters to MUNCH, the exhibition also presents related works from the museum’s collection, revealing Munch’s fascination with workers, women, and children.⁠

🍷 Artists, writers, radicals – the Christiania Bohemians challenged the norms of 1880s Oslo, then known as Christiania.
 
In his early years, Edvard Munch moved within this circle, shaped by intense conversations about art, love and society.
 
Led by provocative writer Hans Jæger, the bohemians rejected convention and championed artistic freedom – ideas that left a lasting mark on Munch’s work 🧑‍🎨
 
📍You can still encounter them at Grand Café in Oslo (@grandcafeoslo @grandhoteloslo), where a monumental mural of the group covers the wall. It was created between 1928–1932 by Per Krohg, son of renowned bohemians Oda and Christian Krohg.

💪 Loud, fearless, impossible to ignore.

For the first time in the Nordic region, Paula Rego – Dance Among Thorns brings together over 140 works by one of the most uncompromising artists of our time.

British-Portuguese artist Paula Rego (1935–2022) became an influential feminist icon through fearless storytelling, dark humour and deeply political imagery. Growing up under António de Oliveira Salazar’s dictatorship in Portugal (1932–1974) shaped a lifelong exploration of power, gender, oppression and freedom. Through paintings, pastels, textiles and large-scale figurative scenes inspired by myths and fairy tales, Rego exposed the tensions between vulnerability and control, desire and anger.

At a time when authoritarian forces are rising globally and women’s bodily autonomy remains under pressure, Rego’s work feels more urgent than ever.

Kim Hankyul’s (@kim________pink) 'Shore' closes this Sunday, 17 May.

🌊 Delve into our 10th-floor gallery and lie beneath the suspended installation on a soft carpeted floor, evoking the feeling of drifting along the seabed.

The work draws on stories from people whose lives are shaped by the sea: a North Korean defector who crossed the Yellow Sea, South Korean haenyeo free divers, and rescue divers working beneath the surface.

📣 For the first time ever at MUNCH, rarely shown paintings by Edvard Munch will soon be on display.

👉 Commissioned in 1923 for Freia’s women’s canteen, these works reflect Munch’s interest in nature and the relationship between humans and their environment, shaped by the rapid industrialisation of the early 20th century. The exhibition also touches upon themes central to the time, including the cacao trade, workers’ rights, and women’s emancipation.

🧑‍🎨 At the time, this was a groundbreaking moment: art created specifically for a women’s space. Now, temporarily relocated from Freia’s headquarters, the works can be experienced up close — alongside a rich selection of sketches, documents, and related pieces.

🌊 'Shore' by Kim Hankyul (@kim________pink) is a five-metre-high immersive installation suspended from the ceiling of our 10th-floor gallery. Since opening, it has welcomed nearly 80K visitors.

With its soft carpeted floor and shifting light, the installation evokes the feeling of lying on the seabed, looking up at the shimmering surface above.

Hypnotic and strangely calming, it’s a work you could stay beneath for hours.
