Conservation biologist Krithi Karanth is the 2026 Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year.
In India, when wildlife damages property or causes a loss of life, it can lead to retributive hunting—destroying the bonds between humans and nature. As the CEO of the Bengaluru-based Centre for Wildlife Studies, Karanth has spent years finding ways to help people live peacefully alongside these animals. Through initiatives that help locals more easily request government remuneration for wildlife-related damage and education programs for those living closest to reserves, Karanth combines science, education, and community partnerships to redefine how people coexist with nature.
Since 2011, the Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year Award has recognized Explorers shining a light on important issues, discoveries, and challenges facing our planet to generate a sustainable future. Discover more about Karanth’s work at the link in bio. #PerpetualPlanet

In his hometown of Osun, Nigeria, photographer David Olayide (@olayidedavid) posed two of his siblings for a portrait meant to make a statement about what we choose to keep and to dispose of. He dressed Charles (at left) and Zipporah Olayide in masks made from discarded VHS tapes, along with traditional Yoruba garments their parents wore during their wedding ceremony. It’s not the first time he’s enlisted his brother and sister to help him execute his artistic vision. “After a while they begin to just settle into the whole idea,” Olayide says, “and they usually are very cool.”
Meet Cinco. A remote camera in southern Arizona has caught a rare glimpse of a jaguar, one of only five documented in the region over the past 15 years. His presence reflects a gradual return of the Western Hemisphere's largest cat across the U.S.-Mexico border after decades of decline due to hunting and habitat loss. The footage also reveals how these elusive cats move through the landscape, but with no breeding females confirmed and growing barriers to their range, that foothold remains uncertain.
Find out what Cinco's appearance could signal for the species at the link in bio.

Trees are all around us, so their details can be easy to miss. But learning to read clues in leaves, bark, and other features can help you identify common species hiding in plain sight. 🌳

Video by @awais.ali.sheikh | An Atlantic puffin gathering grass for its nest suddenly dropped everything after spotting its partner flying overhead. It instinctively launched into a joyful courtship ritual by tossing the grass aside and sharply lifting its head and beak toward the sky. This tender moment unfolded at Látrabjarg, Iceland, one of Europe’s highest sea cliffs and a vital breeding ground where puffins return year after year.

A massive sea lion nicknamed “Chonkers” is having his moment at Pier 39 in San Francisco, drawing crowds eager to take in his sheer size. Chonkers is not a California sea lion, the species people are used to seeing along the coast. Instead, he’s a Steller sea lion, a species that ranges along the North Pacific Rim. While the two look similar, there are key differences—most notably size, with Steller sea lions growing over twice the size of California sea lions. While "Chonkers" isn't the first of its kind to appear at Pier 39, the length of his stay is rare.

Photos by @joelsartore | Napo sakis are known for their coarse, wiry body hair. It performs what is known as piloerection, or the involuntary standing of body hair caused by the contraction of tiny muscles. In warmer months, the fluffing of Napo sakis' hair increases air circulation over the skin, helping dissipate heat. When it's colder, raised hair follicles trap air close to the skin, creating insulation that prevents heat loss. Photos taken @rarec.center. Millions of people across the United States suffer from depression, but treatment can often be costly, ineffective, and frustrating. To improve this, researchers have used brain imaging to identify six distinct "biotypes" of depression, hoping to one day provide targeted treatment based on an individual's unique biomarkers.

Along the coast of Hudson Bay, polar bear cubs depend entirely on their mother for warmth, protection, and nourishment in their first years. As the sun rises, the cubs wake, stretch, and press close to nurse while she scans her surroundings. Captured by Martin Gregus Jr. @mywildlive, this moment shows how even at rest, a mother polar bear remains watchful over her cubs.

Photos by Muhammed Muheisen @mmuheisen | Each year I look forward to capturing these moments in time as the tulip fields come into bloom. From above they form colorful carpets, and the air carries the scent of flowers.
On April 20 and 23, I photographed these scenes while flying over the fields of the Dutch provinces of South Holland and Flevoland. They are part of a story I have been working on for several years, documenting flower season in the Netherlands. For more photos and videos from around the world, follow @mmuheisen.
