Happy 100th birthday, Sir David Attenborough. 🌿
Over the years, he's brought the natural world into our homes, our hearts, and our imaginations — from Scotland's wild coasts to the farthest corners of the Earth. He's shown us nature's wonder, and reminded us of our responsibility to protect it.
At NatureScot, his legacy inspires everything we do. Because if we want future generations to experience the Scotland he helped us fall in love with, we need to make space for nature — now.
Today, how will you play your part? Whether it's a walk in your local greenspace, a moment to notice what's living alongside you, or taking action for nature in your community — every step counts.

🌳 Happy Thurs-jay....!
Often heard before seen, the Eurasian jay is a shy woodland bird with striking blue wing feathers. Part of the crow family, this distinctive and colourful bird is thought to play a crucial role in forest regeneration by burying acorns, some of which grow into new oak trees. Listen for their distinctive calls in woodlands across Scotland, though they’re less common in the far north. 🐦

🐿️ Red-y for Wednesday? We're not sure this squirrel is!
Scotland is a stronghold for the UK’s red squirrels, hosting around 80% of the population. These charming creatures are easily recognised by their russet fur and tufted ears, however they face significant threats from habitat loss and competition with the introduced grey squirrel. Conservation efforts across Scotland aim to protect remaining red squirrel populations through targeted habitat management and community-led monitoring projects.
Report any sightings of red and grey squirrels at Saving Scotland's Red Squirrels.

👁️ Fit for a king!
The kingfisher’s vibrant blue and orange plumage makes it a jewel of Scotland’s waterways. They have a transparent third eyelid, allowing them to see clearly underwater when diving for fish. Have you spotted one recently? 🔷

🔊 Sound on to celebrate #InternationalDawnChrousDay by listening to this wren singing from its elevated perch in response to another wren in its territory 🎵
Known for its loud, complex song, this tiny bird thrives in hedgerows, woodlands, and gardens, where it can often be seen darting through the undergrowth on the hunt for invertebrates.

Have you set yourself the challenge of leaving no trace of your time in Scotland’s great outdoors this weekend?
It’s easy - take a bag with you, to carry your rubbish until you can put it in a bin.
By taking your litter away, you’ll help to protect wildlife, livestock, the environment, and each other.
For more tips, search for the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

Here is a bobbing dipper to put a spring in your step!
In this video, you can see that the dipper has white eyelids. They also have a third, transparent eyelid called a 'nictitating membrane' that they can close to protect their eyes.

Now is the peak flowering time for common gorse, so it’s time to enjoy those bright yellow flowers with their unmistakable coconut scent.
Gorse bushes don’t just provide a splash of colour to the landscape, they also protect bird species that take shelter in these dense and robust shrubs. The flowers are also a source of nectar for bees and butterflies.

There is a good chance of spotting otters in our towns and cities, with many of these mammals now living in urban rivers and becoming used to the presence of people - like this otter, which was filmed on a river in Glasgow.

Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
