Last year, my buddy Drew had an extra seat on a doors off helo he had booked to go photograph surfers at Peahi and offered it to me. Surely he expected me to show up with a gimbal and video rig, or a long lens, and he seemed a bit confused to see that I had only brought my old film camera. When we got to the spot, there were no surfers and nearly no waves, so we toured Maui’s north shore instead.

After finishing the B&W roll that was already in the camera, I had to change rolls without dropping either out of the open doors into the open ocean a couple hundred feet below. The pilot turned the bird to minimize the wind and was super patient with me while I changed rolls. A true team effort.

I had basically forgotten the entire episode until last week when I got some scans back and saw some of my favorite photos I have ever taken.
