Nora Aly is an independent designer based in Cairo, Egypt. She works as an adjunct Professor at the American University in Egypt (AUC). She is mainly interested in Arabic typography which acts as a core element that she integrates in other creative endeavors such as visual communication, branding, type design and graphic design.
Nada Hesham is the founder and CCO of Cairo based independent graphic design studio; 40MUSTAQEL, and the founder and publisher of ISDAR MUSTAQEL; a bilingual non-periodic publication about serious, critical, playful, and spontaneous design practices around the region.
Mina Maurice is a Cairo-based graphic designer and creative director at 40MUSTAQEL. His work explores language and script as ever evolving cultural and political artifacts, with a profound interest in the complex and reciprocal nature of multilingual/multi-scriptural design and Arabic typography.
Jana Traboulsi is a visual artist, graphic designer and academic.
She is the co-founder and creative director of pan-arab quarterly Bidayat and the artistic director of Snoubar Bayrout publishing house. In 2014, she co-founded Sigil, an art collective based in Beirut and New York.
This conversation is part of 𝘜𝘯/𝘣𝘪𝘯𝘥, the public program for 𝘍𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘵: 𝐁𝐞𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐭 𝐀𝐫𝐭 𝐁𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐫.

My spread sketch for @two_pages_project, a project where its curators choose a city, a theme and the first participant then each participant decides who will be next. I got the sketchbook from @maramalrefaei and I passed it to @sarah_mossallam
My participation to this project, made me realize how sketching is very personal and private for me. It has been always associated to the earliest step of the process where I feel safe the most to let out all my unfiltered thoughts and raw initial ideas without being judged by anyone because no one usually see this part of my process. So It was a bit intimidating at the beginning to sketch a whole spread knowing that this time it will be seen by incredible designers and illustrators which is something I haven’t done in years.
I initially thought of sketching an Arabic word that fits the theme “searching” but then I realized that I am resorting to my comfort zone. I have always wanted to visualize how my brain works when I am overthinking and looking for ideas so I thought that’s a good opportunity and it fits the theme :)
